Classic Car Overview
In the early 1970s, a Porsche and VW joint venture began work on a 914 replacement that was to be both a flagship Volkswagen and an entry-level Porsche. However, much like it had with the 914, VW backed out, leaving Porsche to forge ahead on its own. The resulting 924 was vital to Porsches future replacing the 914 and the 912E and providing a glimpse of Porsches direction with the upcoming flagship 928.
VW/Audi supplied the 2-liter inline-four block, which was topped with a Porsche-designed head and CIS injection, canted over to fit beneath a low bonnet line. A rear-mounted transaxle imparted the 924 with superb balance and grip. Various special models followed, including a Turbo and lightweight, stripped-out track-focused Carrera GT homologation specials, proving the capabilities of the chassis. In the early 80s, the 944 joined the range, featuring a Porsche-designed 2.5-liter inline-four, a wider track, and a tuned chassis, while the 924 remained at the entry level. VW ended production of the 2-liter blocks in 1985, so to keep the 924 afloat, Porsche fitted a de-tuned 148 horsepower 2.5, resulting in the 924S.
In 1988, Porsche uprated the 924S to 156 horsepower 50% more powerful than the original 924 and the same as the base 944, making the lighter, more aerodynamic 924S marginally quicker than the more expensive 944.
Because of the 924s entry-level status, many were driven hard and passed down, resulting in high attrition rates despite their excellent build quality. Superb examples are a rare find today, and this marvelous, low-mileage 1988 924S is a prime example of why collectors are finally eyeing Porsches competent junior GT car.
Sold new by Knopf Automotive in Allentown, Pennsylvania, this 1988 924S is a desirable final-year example, finished in Guards red over black leatherette and Porsche-lettering cloth, showing just over 19,000 miles. It left the factory nicely optioned with a Blaupunkt Reno stereo, tinted windscreen strip, air conditioning, electric sunroof, power steering, and more. Service records on file show remained in the care of its original owner from 1988 through 2018, with accompanying PA state inspection receipts backing the exceptionally low miles.
Looking superb in the classic red over black with phone dial alloys, this is an outstanding, beautifully preserved 924S that has led a cherished existence. The glossy paint is believed to be original, with a paint meter showing consistent numbers around the body. Likewise, the exterior trim and decals are well preserved and in excellent condition, as are the alloy wheels and Bridgestone tires, fitted in 2019.
The interior is similarly outstanding, with excellent original leatherette and fabric upholstery, pristine door cards, and an unmarked dash. Even the glass throughout the car, both windows and mirrors, have a near flawless finish. The only notable imperfection is a minor flaw in the outer drivers seat piping. Switchgear and controls remain in place and in good order, and the factory Blaupunkt radio remains in place. It also retains the original tool kit, tire inflator, sunroof storage bag, and owners manuals. A file of service records in the first owners name, original dealership brochures, and the Porsche Production Specifications Certificate (COA) are included.
Displaying just 19,409 miles at the time of writing, the superb original example of a transaxle Porsche is not to be dismissed. Interest in transaxle Porsches has steadily risen as collectors continue to discover the joy of owning and driving these superbly balanced and impressively practical sports cars. The 924S has always punched above its weight, and this collector-worthy, low-mileage, beautifully preserved example will undoubtedly satisfy the staunchest Porsche enthusiast.
