Chrysler didnt invent the muscle SUV , but theyve certainly perfected it. With the Grand Cherokee SRT-8 already under their belt as a bonafide hit, and the limited Hellcat cars (whether it be the Challenger or the Charger) causing a stir in the American automotive world not seen since Carrol Shelby flexed his muscles, some of the crazy geniuses at FCA/Stellantis decided they still needed to get faster, louder, and bigger. And from this temporary insanity was born the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat AWD. Who would have thought shoving a 6.2L Supercharged HEMI into an all-wheel-drive, 3-row SUV would create one of the most entertaining machines ever built? 710 horsepower, a zero-to-60 time of just 3.5 seconds, and a blistering top speed of 180MPH means youll never be late to soccer practice again. With just 1746 miles, this clean, unabused, completely unmodified, and rare Hellcat SUV will make you re-think performance. Why put almost 710 horsepower in a heavy-duty SUV? Why not?!?! Just because the familys driving to Disney for a fun-filled week with an oversized mouse, doesnt mean they dont want to get there at break-neck speeds. The big, bad, brash Durango thrives on being a study in contrasts, an SUV with the heart of a muscle car or a muscle car disguised as a grocery-getter? Can it be both? The look suggests that it can be whatever it damn well pleases, with the updated look of the stock 2021 Durango (arguably the best-looking Durango ever) enhanced by a host of body mods that simply scream performance. From the deeply sculpted front bumper, chin spoiler, big honeycomb front grilles, and gaping hood scoop up front, the ground-effects at the profiles, and the roof spoiler and trumpeted dual exhaust exits out back, this beauty aint subtle in any way, shape, or form. Its a muscular brick that can punch a 100 MPH hole in the wind despite its 5534 curb weight, and that, my friends, takes some serious power. In fact, its only a tenth of a second slower than the 797HP Charger Hellcat Redeye. The gorgeous and rare (only 2K models were initially planned, but an additional 1K were ultimately produced after HUGE demands) Granite Crystal Metallic paint screams at you because, well, why bother trying to be subtle in something like this? Its in fantastic condition, like most SRT and Hellcat models, simply because theyre toys, not daily drivers, and if its ever seen rain, it was only briefly. Bottom-line, it still looks new, and thanks to a $4350 ceramic-coating and PPF application, it will look this good for years to come. As the worlds fastest production 3-row SUV, the cabin better be impressive. The interior is a drivers environment that seems to ignore regular American SUV standards, as its not designed like your typical domestic people movers. Sporty, powered/heated/cooled bucket seats with grippy red-and-black leather hides grab you and hold you in place, and the elegant upholstery is continued on the rear captains chairs and 3rd row. The center console houses a host of controls and the slap-style shifter that controls the 8-speed automatic, a fat leather steering wheel features floppy paddle shifters, and a full array of digital gauges look more Viper than Durango. A giant multi-media touchscreen in the center of the leather dash is ostensibly the cars control center, and rather than list the enormous list of options inside, well just tell you that everything Dodge offered in 2021 is loaded inside. And as you may have guessed, it still has that new-car smell with so few miles on the clock. The 6.2-liter Supercharged HEMI V8 is the most powerful production engine in the US, with 710 horsepower on tap. In all honesty, this thing is absolutely bonkers in every way. Its too much power, too much speed, too much being too much. Its the ultimate Mopar muscle car (excuse me, SUV, I keep forgetting), and the thing just flat-out HAULS. Hit the push-button ignition and it fires instantly, idles perfectly, burbles through an emissions-legal exhaust system, and happily swills pump gas. A 710 horsepower vehicle does all this! I can barely get my head around it. Its linked to an 8-speed automatic transmission, which may seem like the easy way out until you realize that the car is faster with a computer handling the shifts and youll be too busy holding on with two hands and screaming like a little girl for it to matter. Thankfully, its not just some brute that cant handle itself in the corners (both on the track and off), as the reworked suspension is beefed up to notably reduce body roll compared to the 2020 SRT model, the Brembo brakes are as big as manhole covers, and it gets special matte-black forged alloy wheels shod with 20-inch Pirellis that are rumored to have the most fragrant tire smoke. A sure-fire future collectable and a flat-out blast to drive today, there are very few vehicles more outrageous than a Hellcat Durango, and none of them can comfortably carry six passengers.
