2018 Audi R8

The Audi R8 was not designed in a styling studio and then handed to an engineering team. It started as a race car. The R8s origins trace directly to Audis Le Mans program, which dominated endurance racing in the early 2000s, and the engineers built the road car around that same philosophy of lightweight construction, all-wheel drive, and a mid-mounted engine. The result was a supercar that felt immediately approachable, rewarding, and genuinely usable in a way that most cars at this price point are not. This one is finished in Florett Silver Metallic with black leather and red stitching, carbon fiber accents inside and out, and the fabric roof of the Spyder, which turns the already striking R8 silhouette into something even harder to walk away from.

Under the hood is the 5.2 liter naturally aspirated V10, the same engine shared with the Lamborghini Hurac n, producing a factory-rated 532 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. This car has been professionally computer tuned to 630 horsepower, paired with an exhaust that lets it breathe and sound the way a ten-cylinder engine at 7,800 rpm should. There is no turbocharger, no lag, and no shortcuts. The power builds in a straight, clean line all the way to redline and the sound it makes doing it is one of the great experiences in modern motoring. Quattro all-wheel drive and the seven speed dual-clutch automatic put all of that power to the pavement with composure and precision.

Inside, the black leather cabin with red stitching is well appointed with heated seats, drive mode select, the Bang and Olufsen premium sound system, and power everything. The carbon fiber accents throughout the interior and exterior give the car a purposeful, race-derived feel that backs up everything happening under the hood.

The second generation R8 represented the largest leap forward in the cars history. Audi rebuilt the chassis with 50 percent more torsional rigidity than its predecessor while simultaneously reducing weight through extensive use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer panels. The dry weight came in at just over 3,500 pounds for the Spyder, a remarkable number for an all-wheel drive, open-top supercar with this level of performance and equipment. A naturally aspirated V10 at 630 horsepower in a car this light is a combination that does not come along every day.
