THE DODGE SRT VIPER ACR
Following a 2-year hiatus beginning in 2010, Dodge and its SRT high-performance division, revived the legendary Viper for its 5th generation for the 2012 model year. The formula remained true to the Vipers of old: A large displacement V10 engine powering the rear wheels housed in a muscular body with classic sports car proportions. However, many of the finer details were subject to great change. Dodge had the defined goal of turning their once notorious widow maker into a more driver friendly machine with more accessible performance. Simultaneously, the interior fitments were refined and improved to suit the car's price point.
The team at SRT thoroughly achieved their goals with the new Viper. Virtually every performance metric was increased thanks via improvements to the mighty 8.4-liter engine, Brembo brakes, and a stiffer platform. Most importantly, traction control systems made their first appearance ever on a Viper, greatly decreasing the tendency for it to head tail-first into the hedges should the driver get a bit overzealous. This was a fundamentally much more refined car, that was finally on par with just about all of its contemporary rivals.
As with Vipers of yore, the 5th gen was offered in several special editions, the most aggressive among them was the track-focused ACR. Standing for "American Club Racer" the ACR was designed to meet the needs of enthusiasts wanting to explore the limits of the Viper out on track, uninhibited by pesky traffic laws. Central to the ACR's performance is a new aero package, with an aggressive front splitter, winglets, a massive rear diffusor and equally massive rear wing. Dodge claimed nearly 2,000-lbs of downforce available.
Sticky Kumho Ecsta V720 tires, 5-mode stability control, 10-way manually adjustable Bilstein coil-over suspension, and powerful Brembo carbon ceramic brakes help to tame the Viper's inherent bite.
While the 5th Generation Viper was touted for being the tamest, most refined Viper to date, the ACR shows us that it never abandoned its famous dark side.
THE CAR OFFERED
Offered from The Orange Collection is this 2016 Dodge Viper ACR, one of an estimated 290 produced for the world. This stunning example has covered just 39 miles from new to the time of cataloguing and is finished in an appropriately punchy shade of Stryker Orange Pearl. Sold new via Tomball Dodge in Tomball, Texas, the CARFAX report shows three owners from new. With the ACR, options were limited, and this car has optional tri-coat paint ($8,900), ACR red seat belts, car cover, and painted aero assembly kit. It is believed to be one of just 10 examples finished in Stryker Orange without additional stripes and it looks absolutely stunning.
With little more than delivery miles on the clock and having been displayed in The Orange Collection since 2023, this collector-quality Viper is naturally in superlative order. Viper production ended in 2017, leaving an 8.4-liter V10-sized hole where it once stood; however, this brash and muscular ACR reminds us that the distinctly American Viper bowed out at the top of its game.
