Introduced at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is a significant milestone in the brands history, combining classic design elements with cutting-edge performance. Following on the heels of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, it was designed as the spiritual successor of the iconic 300 SL Gullwing, with its characteristic gullwing doors and long hood which, in the case of the SLS, concealed a front-mid-mounted 6.2-liter V-8 engine assembled by hand at AMGs Affalterbach facility in Baden-Wrttemberg, Germany. Multiple limited-edition models debuted over its five-year production run, including the roadster in 2011 and the SLS AMG GT Electric Drive in 2012 but none would top the Black Series introduced in 2014.
Inspired by the SLS AMG GT3 racecar, the Black Series became the highest-performance, roadgoing variant of the SLS. Crafted for uncompromised performance, its enhanced front-mid-mounted V-8 produced an incredible 622 horsepower and 468-pound-feet of torque, making it the highest-horsepower naturally aspirated production V-8 in the world at the time. Meanwhile, aerodynamic carbon fiber components, a lightweight titanium exhaust system, and lower placement of the seven-speed DCT paddle-shift transmission vastly improved driving dynamics compared to the standard SLS AMG. With a lofty 8,000 rpm rev limit, 0 to 60 mph came in just 3.5 seconds on the way to a top speed of 196 mph.
The SLS AMG Black Series featured wider fenders, a fixed carbon fiber rear wing, and exclusive staggered-diameter forged alloy wheels, while the interior included Alcantara and carbon fiber accents, lightweight racing seats, and a specially designed steering wheel. Mercedes-Benz has offered just six Black Series models, with the SLS being among the most exclusive. By the end of its production run in 2015, only 132 are believed to have been delivered to the United States.
The example offered here features an all-black color scheme and remains like new, with less than 500 miles showing on the odometer at cataloguing time. Serviced in January 2024 with an oil change, new tires, and protective ceramic coating, it has been pampered and cherished under current ownership as part of a small collection of significant supercars.
Incredibly well-preserved, having been driven so little since new, this SLS AMG Black Series represents an incredible opportunity for the marque enthusiast or supercar collector eager to own one of the most significant and rarest models in Mercedes-AMGs storied history. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/az25/.
