Something to take on cross-region or cross-country trips without spending money on fuel? The brainchild of Elon Musk with an estimated 230-mile range, the Model S is Tesla s original vehicle. We have a low mileage and fully loaded Model S here at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. Built in Fremont, California on the site of the former New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) factory, which was a General Motors factory prior to that. This Model S is finished in Sycamore Brown (code PMAB) with a tan and black interior. The paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, as is expected from a vehicle that s just seven years old but well taken cared of. The windows and lights all resemble those of a new car, the bodywork is straight and solid while its rear and front cargo areas are tidy. The charging cable and its bag are in the hatchback. The car s body-colored bumpers are in fine form. The dual pane sunroofs look ready for action or at least a day trip somewhere. The Model S originally had independent coil spring suspension on all four wheels front double wishbone, virtual steer axis control arm and rear independent multilink. The car comes with optional Smart self-leveling, height-adjustable air suspension, which was originally an extra cost option. This is accomplished via adjustable Bilstein shock absorbers controlled by the driver. The car lowers itself at highway speeds and can be set to a higher level to traverse steep driveways and rough terrain, mitigating the default low six inches ground clearance and a relatively long 116-inch wheelbase. The Model S offers 26.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, 58.1 cubic feet with the rear seat folded and 5.3 more cubic feet in the trunk. This car rolls on Goodyear Eagle RS-A radials, size 245/45R19. Each tire is mounted on a factory alloy wheel. The wheels are in excellent order while the tires have great depth and are in overall very good order. Safety features include four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, dual front and side air bags, daytime running lights, stability control and anti-theft system with engine immobilizer. In 2013, the Tesla Model S 60 had an AC induction motor making 362 horsepower and 325 lbs-ft of torque connected to a one-speed transmission with a 60-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and driving the rear wheels. The rear axle has a traditional open differential. The front and rear axles have no mechanical linkage with dual motors, the power distribution among them is controlled electronically. Driver convenience features include dual-zone automatic climate control with air filtration; navigation; power mirrors; power door locks; power windows; cruise control; variable-speed power steering with tilt and telescoping column; 12-way power and heated front seats; backup camera; rain-sensing intermittent windshield wipers; rear window defogger; 12-volt power outlets; touch-screen center stack. In contrast to most earlier battery electric vehicles, the battery pack of the Model S forms the floor of the vehicle between the axles, providing the vehicle with several advantages. Most notably, since the battery pack is the heaviest component of the vehicle, the Model S has a center of gravity height of only 18 inches, (about the same as a Lotus Elise), helping it to achieve a lateral acceleration of 0.9 g and good protection against rollover. Secondly, the absence of a heavy engine between the front or rear axle allows the bulk of the mass to be centralized between the axles, lowering rotational inertia allowing it to turn more quickly for its weight. Thirdly, the placement of the battery pack increases the rigidity of the passenger compartment, improving the passive safety of the vehicle. Fourth, placing the battery pack under the vehicle makes it possible to remove or replace the entire unit in 90 seconds for maintenance. As there are no buttons or dials, the Tech Package instrument panel is a 12.3-inch liquid-crystal display (LCD) electronic instrument cluster that indicates speed, power usage, charge level, estimated range and active gear, as well as navigation directions (driven by Garmin). The gear selector can be set to drive, neutral, reverse, and park. The infotainment control touchscreen is a 17-inch multi-touch panel divided into four areas. A top line displays status symbols and provides shortcuts to charging, HomeLink, driver profiles, vehicle information (software version and the vehicle identification number) and Bluetooth. The second line provides access to several apps including Media, Navigation (driven by Google Maps, and thus is separate from the navigation on instrument panel), Energy, Web, Camera and Phone. The central main viewing area displays the (two) active apps, subdivided into upper and lower areas. (Most apps can be expanded to take up the entire area). At the bottom is access to various controls and settings for the vehicle such as doors, locks and lights as well as temperature controls and a secondary volume control. The Tesla Model S was the 2013 World Green Car of the Year, 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year, Automobile magazines 2013 Car of the Year, Time Magazines Best 25 Inventions of the Year 2012, and Consumer Reports top-scoring car in road testing. This would make a great vehicle for regional daytrip or longer jaunts if there s an available supercharger network.
