In comparison to its vastly more expensive predecessor, the SLR McLaren, the SLS AMG is lighter, more comfortable, easier to live with, and far more economical to maintain all while offering similar or, in some cases, improved performance. The reduction in list price largely stemmed from the switch from the SLRs carbon fiber chassis/body to the SLS use of aluminum. The SLS was also developed fully in-house by AMG while the SLR was engineered by McLaren, dramatically increasing R&D costs.

Much like the SLR, the SLS rewards its drivers with stunning good looks this time taking inspiration from the timeless 300 SL Gullwing from the 1950s. Much like its forebear, the SLS utilizes upward-swinging gullwing doors and a front-engine, rear wheel drive layout. However, unlike the 300 SL, the SLS boasts a 6.3L V8 offering 563hp and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, allowing the car to accelerate to 62mph in a claimed 3.8 seconds.
