Classic Car Overview

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys The Monterey Auction event, 13 - 15 August 2026.
$850,000 - $1,100,000 USD

  • The pinnacle of SLR McLaren production; one of only 150 722 S Roadsters produced
  • Showing 1,796 miles at cataloguing time
  • Crystal Antimon Grey Metallic over Black and Anthracite Exclusive Leather
  • Supercharged 5.4-liter AMG V-8 rated at 641 hp and 605 lb-ft of torque
  • Equipped with CD changer and large seats
  • A superb open-top example of the only production supercar produced jointly by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren

The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren emerged in 2003 as one of the most ambitious collaborations in modern automotive history. Jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, its Formula 1 partner at the time, the SLR blended the German automakers design language and expertise in building top-notch luxury cars with the advanced engineering and obsessive craftsmanship of McLarens elite facility in Woking, England. Notably, it marked McLarens first roadgoing automobile since the earth-shattering F1 and, like that car, it redefined expectations. With massive, supercharged power, a top speed beyond 200 mph, and a front-mid-engine carbon fiber chassis, the SLR was undeniably a supercar yet it retained a level of everyday usability and luxury more typical of a high-end grand tourer.

The pinnacle of SLR production is the 722 S edition, introduced as a coupe in 2006 and a roadster in 2009. This ultimate evolution elevated the SLR concept with its hand-built, supercharged 5.4-liter AMG V-8 reworked to deliver 641 horsepower and 605 pound-feet of torque, channeled through a robust five-speed automatic transmission. Performance was staggering: Zero to 62 mph in as little as 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 208 mph figures that place the 722 S among the fastest production cars of any era.

Beyond raw speed, the 722 S benefited from a lower, stiffer suspension, 19-inch lightweight wheels, an enlarged front splitter, revised rear diffuser, recalibrated active airbrake, and carbon-ceramic brakes that were among the largest ever fitted to a road car at the time. Inside, the 722 S Roadster struck a perfect balance between luxury and performance, with a fully insulated, power-operated soft-top, leather upholstery, Alcantara inserts, and carbon fiber accents.

The 722 designation references the starting number of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR driven by Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia, with their run beginning at 7:22 a.m. Subtle badging and purposeful detailing reinforce the cars connection to this storied chapter in Mercedes-Benz history.

The US-market 722 S Roadster offered here is one of just 150 produced. It was dispatched from the factory on 11 November 2008, finished in Crystal Antimon Grey Metallic over Black and Anthracite Exclusive Leather and equipped with a CD changer and large seats. Sold new in Ohio in January 2009, the car later spent time in Pennsylvania before joining the collection in New York from which it is now being sold.

In 2021, the car received a new battery and in March 2026 Mercedes-Benz of Huntington in New York replaced the pneumatic springs for both doors. Showing only 1,796 miles at cataloguing time, this well-preserved 722 S Roadster is an ideal acquisition for collectors seeking a low-mileage example of the ultimate, open-top version of the only production supercar produced jointly by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/mo26/.
