Building a staggering 32-minute winning margin on public roads ahead of team-mate and five-time Formula 1 World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio ensures that the late Sir Stirling Moss lays claim to arguably the single-most celebrated event victory in motorsport history. Alongside navigator Denis Jenkinson, his utter domination of the 1955 edition of the Mille Miglia road race helped the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR he piloted, famously decorated with the race number 722 , earn a reputation as ostensibly the most valuable car in the world.
As such, when the Stuttgart marque partnered with McLaren and revisited the SLR name for its 2000s flagship supercar, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, it was only fitting that the model line should bow out with a tribute to Mosss finest hour (or 10!) behind the wheel. Unveiled to the public at the 2009 North American International Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss was ahead of its time as a modern take on a speedster, arriving more than a decade before Ferrari debuted the Monza SP1 and SP2, McLaren released the Elva, and Aston Martin launched its V12 Speedster and DBR22 models.
Production of the Stirling Moss variant was limited to 75 units that were only available to existing owners who had bought an SLR McLaren, which was chiefly designed by the great Gordon Murray. Losing the windscreen and roof, while gaining restyled carbon fibre body panels, helped shed some 200 kilograms. Yet the engine bay still housed a supercharged 5.4-litre V-8 that fired 641 horsepower to the rear wheels to enable a 3.5-second launch to 100 km/h and a claimed 354 km/h top speed.
The example offered here was completed on 16 December 2009, beautifully specified with Crystal Laurit Silver Metallic paint. Meanwhile, the interior was upholstered in Black and Anthracite Exclusive leather featuring Silver Arrow Leather 300 SL Red accents. The car was additionally configured with large-sized carbon fibre driver and passenger seats, red callipers for the carbon-ceramic brake discs, and the 19-inch twin-spoke alloy wheel design.
Although this Stirling Moss edition was delivered on 29 March 2010, it was notably retained by Daimler for use as a demonstration vehicle. The manufacturer first registered the car for the road in November 2011, retaining it through to March 2012. Then acquired by its first private owner, the car was noted to have covered approximately only 500 kilometres.
Since purchased by the vendor, this Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss has been sparingly driven, but benefits from a major service performed at Mercedes-Benz K ln in September 2025 and accordingly showed a mere 1,935 kilometres at the time of cataloguing. Furthermore, it is offered with a bevy of accessories. These include two leather driving caps and pairs of goggles that charmingly evoke the spirit of Moss and Jenkinson, the driver and passenger compartment tonneau cover panels and their accompanying protective bags, a car cover, owners guide folio, and a scale model.
A rare and show-stopping supercar that tips its hat to a remarkable chapter in motorsport history, this Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss would make for an outstanding addition to any collection as well as being a welcome participant in all manner of driving tours and display events.
