Classic Car Overview
The sleek Model 550 Spyder, designed by Ferry Porsche, was introduced at the 1953 Paris Auto Show and was built to race. The Werks Porsche Team evolved and raced the 550 with outstanding success. Raced as a team, the Werks cars were provided with differently painted tailfins to aid in recognition from the pits. This car is a tribute to Hans Herrmann’s famous “Red Tail” car Number 41. Herrmann had a remarkable Mille Miglia race in 1954, when the gates of a railroad crossing were lowered in the last moment before the fast train to Rome passed. Driving a very low Porsche 550 Spyder, Herrmann decided it was too late for a brake attempt anyway, knocked on the back of the helmet of his navigator Herbert Linge to make him duck, and they barely passed below the gates and before the train, to the surprise of the spectators. Over sixty years after its heralded unveiling, this Porsche legend lives on in the 550 Spyder Tribute by renown coach builder Thunder Ranch. From the hand-fabricated 3″ diameter steel tube frame to the original mid-engine concept, this outstanding reproduction of the 1955, 550 Spyder is faithful to the meticulous detailing and spirit of Dr. Porsche’s original design. Powered by a Boxer 2187cc SCAT Volkstroker engine with dual Weber carburetors 0-60 times are under 5-seconds with a top speed of over 125 mph. This expertly assembled model is titled as a 2007 Porsche and features a long list of equipment including disc brakes, 5-wide hubs, Weber carburetors, jet-coated exhaust and Nardi performance steering wheel just to name a few. The most recent sale of an original 550A Spyder occurred in 2018 with the car selling for 5.3 million dollars! With a little over 600 miles on the odometer this well cared for Spyder 550A Tribute is in exceptional physical and mechanical condition and is sure to be the treasured centerpiece of any collection!
