LARRY'S LEGEND LIVES

Given that the 21st century has seen a sort of return to the roots aspect for the Mustang, it was probably only a matter of time before the Boss 302 made a return. Over the last few years there's been steady and growing interest in the concept of a new-age Trans Am Special.

Classic Car Overview

No one knew it at the time, but when this 2007 Pontiac Solstice roadster came on the scene, it was representing the last great Pontiac. So when you can find one today in a fantastic factory triple-black, you know this is the most affordable and desirable future classic around. Pontiac has always been about striving for thoughtful sports cars in the GM lineup, and that arguably reached its pinnacle with the Solstice. Aiming to be a lighter and more nimble companion to the Corvette, the Solstice has all the great performance design cues we all love with its long hood, curvy details, sleek profile, and short rear deck. Plus, Pontiac was really doing a great job with their styling of the twin grille that was dangerously BMW-like, and everyone loves the dual buttresses that meet the headrests. All of this is straight from the factory, just like glossy black paint and the 18-inch alloy wheels. So what youre looking at is a highly-stock and garage-kept three-owner modern collectible. The interior is just as factory-spec as the exterior, and yes, the black leather means you get the coveted triple-black (factory black paint, folding top, and interior.) The supportive bucket seats highlight a cockpit thats built around the driver. There are signs of use, but averaging 3500 miles annually means this is far from a daily driver appliance. The three-spoke sports steering wheel has all the modern controls you could want. Beyond that is a handsome set of analog gauges that light up red when you turn the key. This is loaded with all the right features, including power windows, power locks, keyless entry, power mirrors, dual airbags, cruise control, a powerful AM/FM/CD stereo with auxiliary input, and cold-blowing air conditioning (always a desirable feature in a convertible.) Under the hood is the 2.4-liter fuel-injected motor. It appears unmodified and well-maintained to remain a desirable modern powerhouse. The Solstice is seen as a Corvette companion because while that was using a bit more of an old-school pushrod V8, the Solstice was for those who wanted a two-seater that utilized a more modern DOHC setup seen in many Japanese and European rivals. The 2.4-liter powerhouse delivers on this perspective with a peppy motor to match its nimble fully independent suspension. And just like the Corvette, this Pontiac is great for drop-top grand touring with features like power steering, a limited-slip rear end, and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS. Plus, the five-speed automatic transmission is versatile with nice radios, good kick-downs into power, and easy overdrive cruising. Complete with the owners manual, this Solstice is a blast to drive today and a great classic to have for tomorrow. Offering all of this at such an affordable price means it will be leaving us soon.
