Classic Car Overview
The original GT500 hit the scene for 1967, packing a 428 Cl engine that delivered an advertised
355 HP. Most agree it was closer to 400 HP, but what was so interesting about the GT500 was that it wasn't entirely about rip-roarin' juvenile-applauding acceleration. No question, it moved very well, but most agreed again, the GT350 was a more spirited pony to drive. It was a bit more mechanical in its sounds and revved more freely. It was obvious the GT500 was put together for a more upscale clientele who may or may not want to go whisking around a racetrack somewhere. But they could easily enjoy the commute to work or date night in refined dignity with an air of exclusivity. Regardless, it was a legendary car and remained in production through 1969, with unsold
'69s being given new 1970 VINs under FBI supervision to be sold that year. And then there were none, until the 2005 Mustangs arrived with their retro-styled bodies and interiors. This was a clean slate, and Ford and Shelby began delivering Shelby-branded vehicles once again with the GT500 debuting for 2007. Packing a supercharged 5.4L/500 HP V-8 engine, a revised suspension, modified body and other details, it was an exciting offering indeed, bringing the Mustang brand back to the realm of the super high performance. Rare again, the GT500 was expensive and, unlike the original, it offered sensational performance and that refined dignity that mature audiences gravitated to.
