The 5.0L S85 V10 produced 500 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque from the factory, and is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a variable-locking differential.

The "E63/E64" BMW M6 coupe and convertible used the "S85" V10 engine, which was shared with the contemporary M5. It revs to an 8,250-rpm redline and is regarded by enthusiasts as one of the most distinctive engines ever put into a BMW. Initially offered only with an SMG automatic transmission, a 6-speed manual was added midway through the 2007 model year and only in the North American market.
