To celebrate Bernd Schneider claiming the fourth out of his record-breaking five DTM championship titles in 2003, Mercedes-Benz commissioned the HWA AG team that had masterminded his success to produce an imposing road-car counterpart to the carbon fibre silhouette racer. The result was the flared-arched CLK DTM AMG.

Just 100 coups were completed alongside 80 Cabriolet editions. Both models gained a thunderous, 5.4-litre V-8 engine enhanced by a supercharger to deliver more than 580 horsepower to the rear wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission operated by paddle shifters behind the race car-inspired steering wheel.

The drop-top, European-specification example offered here was delivered on 9 May 2006. Perfectly suited to the cars mean stance which is further accentuated by the dished, 17-inch, split alloy wheels it was finished in Obsidian Black over a carbon fibre interior trimmed in Anthracite and Black Avantgarde fabric.

Incredibly rare, sinister, and tied to Mercedes-Benzs remarkable motorsport record, this CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet has been consigned to auction from a significant private collection based in Germany. The car is accompanied by Dekra inspection certificates from its time in its country of origin (available to view on file). With an odometer that displayed 30,641 kilometres at the time of cataloguing, here is a bona fide modern classic that still offers an exciting road-going race car driving experience.
