Developed to celebrate AMG-Mercedes dominant performances in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) championship, the Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG represented a roadgoing interpretation of the race-winning CLK. Following consecutive championship victories in 2002 and 2003, including Bernd Schneiders title-winning campaign in 2003, AMG embarked on an ambitious project to create the ultimate expression of its motorsport success. The resulting CLK DTM AMG was unveiled in 2004 as a strictly limited-production model, with just 100 coupes and 80 cabriolets built. Powered by AMGs formidable supercharged 5.5-liter M113K V-8, the CLK DTM AMG immediately became one of the most exclusive and desirable Mercedes-Benz models of its era.

Yet rarer still was a small series of experimental vehicles developed behind closed doors by AMG. Designated CLK DTM AMG P900, only four examples were constructed as engineering prototypes to evaluate a revolutionary new powerplant: the M156 V-8, the first engine developed entirely in-house by AMG.

Completed in 2005, the P900 served as a development platform for the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter M156 engine prior to its public debut. Constructed around an all-aluminum block, the new engine weighed just 438 pounds while incorporating four overhead camshafts, variable valve timing, and 32 valves. Output was rated at 503 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, figures that would establish the M156 as one of the defining high-performance engines of its generation. Marketed as a 6.3-liter in tribute to Mercedes-Benzs legendary 300 SEL 6.3, the engine would subsequently power much of the AMG range and cement AMGs reputation as a world-class engine manufacturer.

Visually, the P900 was even more extreme than the production CLK DTM AMG. Drawing heavily from its competition counterpart, it featured Lexan side windows, carbon fiber doors, aggressively ventilated front wings, DTM-style mirrors, carbon fiber front canards, and a distinctive AMG livery. A twin-fin rear wing further distinguished the model from the roadgoing CLK DTM AMG. The interior was similarly race-focused, incorporating fire-resistant bucket seats, competition harnesses, a full roll cage, Alcantara-trimmed surfaces, a digital instrument display, and a racing steering wheel.

Although based upon a CLK 500 Avantgarde, the P900 was engineered to standards far closer to a contemporary DTM racecar than a production Mercedes-Benz. It stands today as a remarkable demonstration of AMGs technical capabilities during a transformative period in the companys history.

Of the four P900 prototypes constructed, only two are believed to survive, with the example on offer reported to be the sole surviving car carrying an authentic DTM chassis number. Originally retained by AMG, this exceptional prototype was later offered exclusively to the renowned Mercedes-Benz of Laguna Niguel, California, where it formed part of their private collection before being acquired by the consignor. Now displaying fewer than 225 kilometers at cataloguing, it remains one of the most significant AMG prototypes ever to emerge from Affalterbach.

As the development car for the landmark M156 V-8 engine and believed to be one of only two surviving examples, this CLK DTM AMG P900 occupies a singular place in Mercedes-AMG history, offering a once-in-a-generation opportunity to acquire an exceptionally rare and significant piece of the marques engineering legacy.
