Classic Car Overview
1958 LISTER-CHEVROLET REPLICA
The British built Lister race car was a very successful competitor both on Europe and U.S. race tracks in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. Many famous drivers of that era successfully raced Listers. The famous American Sportsman, Briggs Cunningham, after racing cars of his own design in the early 1950’s was the first team owner to race Listers in the U.S. Originally powered by Jaguar engines, later versions had Chevrolet Corvette motors. The cars were nicknamed “Knobbly”, the British expression for “covered with bumps” because of their huge, bumpy wheel arches and gigantic hood bulge.
In the early 2000’s Chuck Beck of Porsche 356 replica kit car fame fell under the spell of the original Lister shape and later borrowed a knobbly example to model from for his own company. He stretched the wheelbase to give more driver room and fabricated a strong chassis that accepted Corvette suspension and running gear. Beck-Listers have embarrassed Cobra replicas at many kit car track events (which seems only fair, considering the Lister’s legacy – prior to importing the AC Ace Cobra, Lister was the first English road racer Carroll Shelby brought to Texas. He then race prepared it lgwith a small block Chevy engine for Jim Hall, later of Chaparral racer fame). Avanti Motors, which was based in Villa Rica, Georgia (just outside Atlanta) at the time, produced approximately fifty of the Chuck Beck designed Listers. They were fiberglass “rollers” built without engines.
2005 Avanti (Beck)Lister Chevrolet AMCBL00034
In 2005 a Detroit businessman and Lister enthusiast contracted Avanti to produce the vehicle you see here, number 34 of the run. It was built as a roller and shipped to Detroit where The Vette Shop installed a 350 cu.in. small block Corvette engine. The car is still owned by the Detroit businessman and has been driven only 797 miles in 13 years. It was the featured automobile at the 2013 Grosse Pointe Concours D’Elegance. Its picture was featured on all the promotional material for the event.
The car is a real attention getter – from it’s unique aggressive race car styling to its loud exhaust note emanating from its unmuffled side pipes. The ride is stiff, as you would expect from a race car with its unique tubular frame. The engine is strong, the four speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter functions easily and the car corners well with its Corvette C4 suspension. The car has a brand new battery. Will consider all reasonable offers.
