Following the success of the competition Diablos, Lamborghini partnered with Reiter Engineering and Audi Sport to launch the Murcilago R-GT at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. Built to the FIA and ACO regulations for GT1 racing, the model was campaigned in the European FIA GT Championship and American Le Mans Series.
The R-GT was powered by a 6.0-litre V-12 engine mated to a sequential gearbox and featured rear-wheel drive instead of the road-going Murcilagos four-wheel-drive configuration. The race team arm of the Japanese Lamborghini Owners Club, better known as Team JLOC, sought a Murcilago for use in the Super GT series and later in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Accordingly, this car was acquired by JLOC in 2004.
Raced in Japan over a number of years, chassis 61 most notably entered the inaugural Asian Le Mans Series in 2009. This short season consisted of two 500-kilometres races at Okayama. Driven by Atsushi Yogou and Hiroyuki Iiri, the Lamborghini claimed victory in the GT1 class in the opener before backing that up with 2nd in race two. Accordingly, the duo claimed the division championship title. After 2009, chassis 61 remained with Team JLOC prior to being exported to Europe and entering a private collection.
Acquired by the current owner in 2021, this Lamborghini R-GT was sent to BBM Sport to be converted for road use. A comprehensive and extremely thoughtful rebuild was undertaken, and the car was equipped with the necessary changes to register it in the United Kingdom in 2022. A thorough summary on file details all the work carried out.
This wild machine is regarded as being surprisingly good on public roads, yet could easily be converted back for track use if so required. It is recommended that interested parties inquire and arrange an in-person viewing to fully appreciate this exciting offering.
One of approximately 16 examples built, this Murcilago R-GT GT1 offers the potential for road and track day use in addition to being eligible to compete in Masters Endurance Legends, Historic Sportscar Racing in the United Stares, and Endurance Racing Legends with Peter Auto, including its race at the Le Mans Classic.
