Classic Car Overview

The Mach 1 name has always meant something specific at Ford. It is a reference to the speed of sound, first broken by Chuck Yeager in 1947, and Ford has reserved the badge for Mustangs that could back it up. The 2003 and 2004 revival was Fords way of bridging the gap between the standard GT and the top-of-the-line SVT Cobra, and enthusiast response was strong enough that Ford committed to a second year of production. Only 7,137 were built in 2004, making it the rarer of the two years. This one is finished in Screaming Yellow, a color that was introduced exclusively for the 2004 model year, which means the color and the car are perfectly matched. It comes with the original window sticker, original bill of sale, and a Ford Performance Group certificate, which is about as well documented as these cars get.

Under the hood is the 4.6L V8 backed by a five speed manual, and this engine is not the same unit you would find in a standard GT. Ford fitted it with high-flow cylinder heads borrowed directly from the SVT Cobra and intake camshafts from the 5.4 liter Lincoln engine, making it the most capable naturally aspirated 4.6 Ford ever put into a Mustang. It produces 305 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque from the factory, and this one has been thoughtfully built on top of that foundation with a K&N airbox setup, a polished performance throttle body, and Borla mufflers that let it breathe and sound the way it should. SR Performance struts and shocks with caster chamber plates sharpen the handling, slotted and drilled rotors all around improve braking, and a Hurst shifter makes every gear change feel deliberate and precise.

Inside, the black leather interior is clean and well kept with a yellow shifter knob that ties back to the exterior perfectly. Power windows, mirrors, and locks are all present, and a Kenwood stereo handles the audio. The 18 inch aftermarket Mach deep dish wheels wearing Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires give the car a stance that fills the wheel wells and looks purposeful without being overdone. The black hood decals are period correct and sharp.

The Mach 1 name disappeared again after 2004 and did not return until 2021. That makes the 2003 and 2004 revival cars a closed chapter in Mustang history with a fixed production number that will never change. A Screaming Yellow example with documentation, a five speed manual, and a clean, well-sorted build behind it is exactly what collectors are looking for as these cars quietly start to appreciate.
