Lamborghinis successor to the Diablo, and the first new model released under the control of the Volkswagen Group, was the Murcilago. Released in 2001 with deliveries to the US market beginning the following model year, the Murcilago features a carbon fiber body wrapped around a tubular space frame. The design from Luc Donckerwolke evinces Volkswagens involvement while remaining concordant with many earlier Lamborghini models. At speed, the Murcilago automatically deploys a rear spoiler and pair of bat wings, which emerge from the rear canopy to improve engine cooling. These bat wing cooling panels have carried over to successive generations of this model, and they are among the most distinctive, stylish, and functional features of the Murcilago design.
As the first Lamborghini supercar created from inception with all-wheel drive, the Murcilago benefited from development of the technology in the preceding Diablo as well as from Audis considerable expertise in the area. The chassis layout remained unchanged from before: a V-12 positioned longitudinally ahead of the rear axle. An evolution of the companys iconic 12-cylinder dating back to the 1960s, the engine displaced 6.2 liters and produced 572 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque at launch, with subsequent iterations adding more displacement and power. An improved six-speed manual was the only transmission offered initially.
Following years of declining sales, the Murcilago helped breathe life into the struggling manufacturer. It combined all the panache and excitement one would expect from a Lamborghini with the refinement one would expect from a modern vehicle.
In a tradition established by the Countach 25th Anniversary and the Diablo SE, Lamborghini celebrated another company milestone with the release of the Murcilago 40th Anniversary. Limited to just 50 numbered examples, all vehicles were finished in Verde Artemis, a three-layer pearl-effect paint. Additionally, the exterior was furnished with an optic carbon fiber coating on the upper door molds and the veletto pillar where the gas cap is located. Grey anthracite wheels, silver grey calipers, and a new exhaust system complete the exterior treatments. Beneficially, all Murcilago 40th Anniversaries were delivered with blueprinted engines from the factory.
Inside, the cabin is finished with a unique asymmetrical scheme. While both seats feature white inserts, the drivers cockpit is covered in Grigio Syrius perforated leather whereas smooth black leather is used for the passenger area.
The example offered here, car number 50 of 50, is one of just 19 Murcilago 40th Anniversaries sent to North America. Under single ownership with the President of Lamborghini Toronto from 2003 through 2020, the vehicle now shows with approximately 6,700 miles on the odometer at the time of cataloguing and was recently the recipient of a major service.
