Classic Car Overview

One of 500 built. 39,713 one-owner miles. Beautiful two-tone interior. Powerful 5.4-liter SOHC V8. Bedliner and tonneau cover. Nicely documented. An unusual muscle truck with a great pedigree, ready to enjoy!

Special edition pickups are pretty common these days, but in 2003, getting the Ford Motor Company to approve your limited-edition truck and sell it in their showrooms was really something unique. Nevertheless, LA West Luxury Vehicles managed to do just that: create a special F150 with a unique look and substantial upgrades that made it more than just a tape-and-badges kind of thing, and sold it through Ford dealers across the country. Only 500 Boss 5.4 pickups were built in 2003, making this a rather unusual find. This particular 2003 Ford F150 Boss 5.4 is a Stage IV model with every available feature and shows just 39,713 original miles. It has had just one owner from new, so you know it has always been treated as something special. Beyond the base Boss 5.4 package, it is completely unmodified and remains in excellent condition throughout. The vivid yellow paint certainly makes the F150 flare-side bodywork pop, and the custom body kit gives it an aggressive performance look. Add in the twin-nostril steel hood and black accents, and you get a truck that still looks fantastic more than 20 years later. Special Boss 5.4 badges on the front fenders and tailgate quickly identify this F150 as something special, not your run-of-the-mill F-series. You also get a full tonneau cover to keep your gear dry, a drop-in bedliner for heavy-duty work (although this truck has apparently never worked a day in its life), and special taillight covers that give it a unique look from the back.

Inside, LA West went the extra mile by completely reupholstering the F150. Instead of fuzzy factory cloth seats, you get a pair of nicely tailored buckets finished in black with yellow accents and custom Boss 5.4 embroidery on the headrests. Virtually every available option was standard on the Boss, including power windows, locks, and driver s seat, cruiser control, tilt steering column, A/C, and an AM/FM/CD stereo system that still sounds pretty good. The dash got a matching black and yellow upgrade while the original Ford factory gauges monitor the engine. Special matching floor mats again embroidered with the Boss 5.4 logo protect the carpets and the two-tone steering wheel is just plain cool. It also includes a sliding rear window for those days when it s just not quite hot enough for the A/C, and you ll note that the carpets, door panels, and headliner remain in almost new condition. Even decades later, this is a pretty comfortable place to hang out.

The neat thing about the Boss 5.4 is the 5.4 liter SOHC V8 living under the hood. With 260 horsepower and 350 lb-ft. of torque, it makes the relatively compact F150 Flareside feel like a muscle car. LA West was wise enough to leave it stock, so reliability and maintenance are unaffected, and with only 39,000 miles on the clock, this thing should have a lot of fun miles left in it for years to come. Fuel injection ensures its starts easily and runs properly every time and all the ancillary hardware is in excellent shape, from the belts and hoses to the wiring and other soft parts. It just works like it s supposed to. The 4-speed automatic transmission also offers clean shifts and a tall overdrive for relaxed cruising on the highway, especially with 3.55 gears out back. There s a great-sounding stainless steel exhaust system that probably adds a few horsepower and terminates in two polished tips under the rear bumper. 4-=wheel disc brakes are a welcome find on a pickup, with these showing recent service so it runs, drives, and stops properly. 20-inch chrome wheels were standard with the Boss 5.4 package, with these wearing 275/45/20 Goodyear radials all around.

Documentation is extensive, including the original Ford owner s manual, three window stickers (original Ford, end-user Ford post-modification, and LA West) showing an original MSRP of $37,820, a Certificate of Authenticity, and several Boss 5.4 show boards.

As I said, special edition pickups are often nothing, uh, special. But when they come from the manufacturer with the factory s backing, a strong pedigree, and verifiable rarity, perhaps they re worth a second look. This Boss is beautifully preserved, properly maintained, and still draws attention at shows. For the money, that seems like a winner to us. Call today!
