The 2001 Renault Sport Clio lineup featured two distinct high-performance models: the front-wheel-drive Clio Renaultsport 172 and the mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive Clio V6. The 172 was a nimble hot hatch, while the V6 (the example offered here), was a radically styled, limited-production sports car that replaced the rear seats with a large engine. The Clio V6 was a completely different beast. Designed as a spiritual successor to the classic Renault 5 Turbo, it moved the engine to the middle of the car and drove the rear wheels. This unique automobile is powered by a 3.0L 24 valve V6 engine coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission and rear wheel drive, and it has a top speed rating of 241 kph. Designed by French automaker Renault the Phase 1 models, like the example offered here, were built by Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) in Uddevalla, Sweden and this particular car was sold new in Germany and these cars were low volume production making them extremely rare. The design process for the Phase 1 models took place in Sweden at the Uddevalla facility. Renault partnered with TWR to ensure the chassis could handle the increased power and weight. While it shares a name with the standard hatchback, the underpinnings are almost entirely unique. The transition from front-engine to mid-engine required a total reimagining of the rear subframe. Consequently, the car lacks rear seats to make room for the massive powerplant. In 2001, Renault produced exactly 1,513 units of the iconic mid-engined Phase 1 Clio V6 Renault Sport, and they were hand-built quickly became a modern classic. There are only 30 to 55 actively licensed Phase 1 Sport Clio models currently registered for road use in the UK (depending on the time of year) and there are likely no more than 5 or 6 Sport Clios in all of Canada!
The example offered here is outstanding in every way and having travelled only 80,500 kms (50,000 miles) the car still retains its original paint finish and original interior, both in showroom-new condition. Other features include 17 inch alloy wheels with Nitto Motivo tires, 4-wheel disc brakes with yellow calipers, ice-cold air conditioning, power windows and power mirrors.
The current owner has thoroughly enjoyed this rare mid-engined work of art for the past 9 years and during that time, he has accumulated a huge inventory of New-Old-Stock parts with an estimated accumulated purchase cost in excess of $10,000 and they all go with the car.
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own one of the rarest cars in Canada, and in fact worldwide!
