Classic Car Overview

The Jeep Cherokee XJ is the vehicle that invented the modern SUV. That is not an exaggeration. It was the first vehicle in history to use the phrase sport utility vehicle in its own sales brochure, and when it debuted in 1984 with unibody construction and available four-wheel drive in a compact package, every other automaker scrambled to catch up. The XJ ran for 18 years with the same basic formula because the formula was right from the beginning. Under the hood is the 4.0 liter PowerTech inline six backed by a four speed automatic. For the 2000 model year Jeep upgraded this engine with a coil-on-plug ignition system that gave it 193 horsepower, the most power the 4.0 ever made in an XJ. It is a torquey, dependable motor that owners routinely drive past 200,000 miles with basic maintenance, and four-wheel drive is on tap whenever the road gets rough. The XJs live front and rear axles, combined with its unibody construction, gave it off-road capability that surprised competitors who assumed a lighter truck could not do what it did.

Inside, the grey cloth interior is clean and original with power windows, power locks, power mirrors, cruise control, and air conditioning and heat all present and working. This is a well-equipped, honest Sport trim that has been kept in good shape and is ready to be enjoyed.

Today the XJ is one of the most sought-after and modified compact SUVs on the market. Clean, unmodified examples like this one are exactly what buyers are hunting for, because most of the good ones have been lifted, cut, and wheeled into the ground. This one has not.
