Classic Car Overview
The second generation Viper was unveiled in 1996 and, in open-top RT/10 form, didnt look drastically different from the first generation, but featured a host of additional comfort features, along with a nice bump in performance. This 2000 Viper RT/10 is from mid-way through the second generation of the car, and has been under the care of a single owner for the last 12 years.
Finished in sinister Black over Black leather, this RT/10 shows 63,020 KM on the odometer, which translates to just 39,158 miles, and the car remains in very good overall condition. As a second generation Viper, you can easily see some of the many improvements over the first generation, by looking around the exterior. Things like a hard removable roof panel, exterior door handles, and glass windows with power mechanisms. The exhaust also exits at the rear of the car, rather than the sills which greatly increases the risk of burns. These items combine to make for a much nicer to use car, and it looks outstanding sitting on the chrome factory 5-spoke wheels.
Although the interior is considerably nicer than an early Viper, there is little in the cabin of this RT/10 to distract you from the task at hand - driving. Drop down into the black leather seat and you are met by a 3-spoke steering wheel with a speedometer and tachometer just in front of you - to your right sit four gauges in molded pods, showing items like fuel level, oil temperature and water temperature. Below them sits an Alpine head unit and a basic 3-dial HVAC system with air conditioning.
Under the hood sits the heart of the Viper - an 8.0-liter V10 that produces a stump-pulling 450 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque. When paired to a 6-speed Tremec manual gearbox, the car was capable of 0-60 mph in the low-4 second range, and the quarter mile in 12.4 seconds at 115 mph. In 2000, the Viper received some additional chassis stiffening from the factory which was later installed on earlier second generation cars. Sitting low and wide, with enormous tires front and rear, the Viper has enormous amounts of mechanical grip, but not a driving aid in sight, with 2000 standing as the final year of Viper without standard ABS.
It is hard to have much more of a thrill than behind the wheel of a Viper - and the second generation RT/10 is a perfect mix of usability, while retaining most of the raw, sometimes scary performance the model is known for. This example would make the perfect summer fun car, and could be used for special occasions or as a nice-weather daily driver without issue.
