THE NISSAN SKYLINE R34 GT-R

The R34-generation Nissan Skyline GT-R, produced from 1999-2002, marked the final time the GT-R bore the legendary RB26 inline-six engine. The R32 GT-R earned its "Godzilla" moniker by crushing all comers in Group A touring car racing beginning in the late 1980s. The name and associated reputation stuck, as the R33 and R34 brought home the hardware in the home-grown Japanese GT Championship. In many ways, the R34 was an evolution from the ground-breaking R32 and R33 models, being a more refined, more mature beast than its predecessors, offering improved handling, a smoother ride and enhanced interior comfort.

The distinctive and aggressive silhouette of the R34, penned by Kozo Watanabe, sets it apart from its then (and arguably still) rivals such as the Honda NSX, Toyota Supra and Mazda RX-7, and is considered a timeless design, immortalized for a generation of enthusiasts in Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo game series. Powered by the 2.6-liter twin-turbocharged RB26 engine, the standard R34 was rated at a conservative 276bhp, sent through all four wheels via Nissan's ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system. A standard R34 can reach 155mph, with much more potential thanks to myriad special models and seemingly unlimited tuning potential.

The R34 received numerous updates over its relatively short four-year production run, with suspension and bodywork revisions in addition to interior upgrades, and a host of special editions. Early examples are finally available to USA-based collectors, who can now experience what makes the R34 so enduringly desirable. Widely lauded as a true driver's car, with the six-speed Getrag gearbox, pedals and steering working in harmony for an irresistibly addictive driving experience.

THE CAR OFFERED

This 1999 Skyline GT-R represents one of the many special edition models to roll through the hands of Nissan's renowned in-house tuning branch, NISMO. This R34 GT-R NISMO V-Spec comes to us via an avid US-based JDM collector and is one of a relatively small number of R34s on our shores. It has been enjoyed as intended, showing just under 65,000km at the time of cataloguing, while being well maintained by its enthusiastic owner.

Pursuant to the Skyline Registry, this car was originally completed in V-Spec tune, which at the time was rated for approximately 330 bhp. Of course, the RB26DETT inline-six is famous for leaving plenty on the table, and this car takes full advantage of that potential via its NISMO R-Tune spec engine with performance add-ons. The R-Tune is quite a special engine, based on the strengthened, reinforced N1 block, adding new pistons, balanced/lightened rotating assembly, ported cylinder head, reprofiled cams, and revised turbos and exhaust, pushing out a stonking 450bhp. This car adds a slew of parts including NISMO N1 turbos and intercooler, GReddy radiator and intake, TOMEI fuel rail, SARD fuel pressure regulator, Samco silicone hoses, and a Haltech Elite ECU to keep it all in check. The engine exhales through an HKS exhaust system, while adjustable NISMO suspension works with Super HICAS steering and all-wheel drive to help keep everything pointed straight.

Finished as it left the factory in GV1 Black Pearl, the body has been adorned with Xenon lamps, a carbon rear wing, Ray's forged alloy wheels, and the signature red, white, and grey NISMO colors. Inside, there's a pair of supportive Bride Stradia II seats, a NISMO instrument clutser, and a few other choice bits to ensure occupants get the best out of this legendary Japanese supercar.

Coveted by an entire generation of enthusiasts, the R34 GT-R delivers on the hype with staggering performance and distinctly muscular looks. This superb and thoughtfully updated example can be the cornerstone of any JDM collection or proudly represent Japan standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the best performance cars Europe, the UK, and USA have to offer.
