Classic Car Overview

KEY FACTS

This Land Rover Defender is a rugged and versatile 4×4 soft-top, with verified military provenance and recent recommissioning.
It is powered by a 2.5-litre 300Tdi four-cylinder diesel engine, driving all four wheels via an R380 five-speed manual gearbox and LT230 transfer case.
Built in September 1999 at Land Rovers Solihull factory, it was delivered new to Land Rover Italia SpA and was subsequently commissioned for service with the Italian Army under the AR90 military programme.
A genuine LHD export specification vehicle, it retains matching drivetrain and axle numbers, and still has its original military registration identity of EI JA333.
First registered in September 1999, this example was Italian-delivered and has reportedly had one civilian owner since its military decommissioning.
The odometer shows 240,750 km.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

As an AR90 model, this military specification made use of the earlier 300 TDI engine, but using the improved TD5-style chassis architecture, body components and tub, as well as revised wiring systems and updated dashboard and electrical components.
Land Rover kept its 300 TDI engine available in military-spec models of this era, as it was famously EMP-resistant thanks to mechanical simplicity versus the later TD5 models.
The seller notes that this AR90 features various elements not found on standard road cars of the era, possibly added by the Special Vehicles department, including the reinforced rear door, external spare wheel carrier assembly, and factory half-doors
This Defender 90 is finished in original Nato Green over grey denim twill and vinyl trim.
It rides on the correct military wheel and tyre configuration consistent with Italian Army specification, including Michelin XPC 7.50×16 tyres, which are now costly items to source.
The Defender is accompanied by its British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, invoices for recommissioning work, and the important Italian military demilitarisation and transfer documentation (Dispaccio di Immatricolazione), formally confirming the transfer of the vehicle from military ownership into civilian circulation.
Two keys are also included.

CONDITION

Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition.
Specific notes from the seller include: The bodywork has been repainted. There is some creasing on the body sills below the doors, and a tear in the aluminium on the rear number plate panel around one of the military convoy lights. The interior has been reupholstered. The rear bench seats are slightly bent and worn. The transmission has been replaced with a like-for-like exchange unit.

SUMMARY

The Land Rover Defender 90 is a legendary off-roader, celebrated for its robust construction, go-anywhere capability, and timeless design. This particular example boasts fascinating military provenance being an original export AR90 specification vehicle seeing use with the Italian Army, prior to being officially transferred for civilian use, and more recently subject to an extensive recommissioning and preservation programme. Retaining authentic military character and patina, it is a rare opportunity to acquire a particularly storied late-production 300Tdi Defender, which could make a robust companion for adventures or a distinctive addition to any collection of iconic 4x4s.
