Classic Car Overview
For consignment, a 1999 Dodge Dakota R/T short bed pickup truck with a title verified 98,046 actual miles. In the spirit that created the GMC Typhoon from the Syclone, Dodge also produced the Durango R/T during this period and both were good enough to make Muscle Machine magazines top 10 muscle trucks of America.
Exterior
Theres no mistaking the Dodge nose which has family ties to the Viper, here with integrated fog lights in the lower valance. The clean design is best viewed from the side, where Flame Red is enhanced by the mixed font decals that express the model, engine size, and the coveted R/T designation. 17-inch Dodge wheels, also formed by genetics, carry 25/60R17 tires with a mid 2020 date code. The bed is lined with a rugged plastic liner and presents in good condition with the addition of chrome bed rails on top. Imperfections include significant peeling or failing clear coat throughout and missing completely from the hood and roof, scratches, a crack on the grille surround, chips, scuffs, and flex cracks on the wheel flares.
Interior
Gray molded plastic door panels are dressed up with cloth inserts and black switchgear and both appear clean. Cloth bucket seats take on the color palette and also present in well preserved condition. Black frames the control area, starting with the steering wheel and framing the basic instrument cluster behind plexiglass, while an updated Pioneer AM/FM/CD player resides in the center stack, adjacent to the vertical A/C panel. While the center console shows a touch of patina, the gray carpet below remains in nice condition and is protected by robust carpeted mats. Our gray cloth headliner shows a touch of age but is fully intact and includes an overhead console.
Drivetrain
Here we have it, the 5.9 liter Magnum V8, pushing out 250 horsepower and fueled through injection. Its mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission and routes power to the rear axle and 3.55 gears. The bay presents in original and driver quality condition.
Undercarriage
The spare tire with Dodge wheel and chrome tips highlight the relatively clean underside. The single exhaust runs through a stainless Magnaflow muffler which emits two tail pipes that become two exhaust tips. Power disc brakes do the work up front assisted by the power drums in back while suspension includes coil springs up front and leaf springs in the rear. We find some typical surface rust but no invasive rust is here.
Drive-Ability
The V8 comes to life without hesitation and we take this red muscle truck through the paces to check functionality, during which it excels at doing everything well with decent power and good handling, however the truck does pull left. Beyond that, all functions work as intended and were content to put this on the showroom floor. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
According to dodgedakotrt.com, only 522 Flame Red Dakota R/T pickups with the standard cab were produced and less than 5,000 total in 1999. Theres plenty of aftermarket support and a fervent group of enthusiasts who recognize the mostly untapped collectability of this legitimate muscle truck. This example has enormous potential as a usable daily, or with some TLC, a fairly rare show truck.
