1997 Mitsubishi Delica

In 1968, Japanese automakers unknowingly changed the game for an all purpose, all terrain vehicle for the long haul. The first generation Delica was named after the English phrasing for what it was destined to be; a Delivery Car. After multiple generations, face lifts, and updates to technology, we find this L300; a 4WD van designed to be a people mover that can go anywhere. In current times, the Delica is one of the most popular JDM Vans to be used in the adventure van movement, for its spacious and utilitarian interior, indestructible Turbo Diesel engine, and its all traversing drivetrain.

Though publicly stated 21 years after this van was marketed, Mitsubishis 2018 slogan, Drive your Ambition, stands true throughout all generations. This P35W is pushed along by its 2.5L Turbo Diesel engine, the 4D56-T. Cold winter startups are a breeze; a turn of the key warms the glow plugs, and cylinder temperatures rise with each cycle, making it easier to start. This workhorse was never offered in the United States, however parts sourcing is still easy thanks to suppliers around the globe. Its analog transmission is preferred by many for its simplicity, shifting through all gears without worry. Selectable 4WD offers the ability to easily tackle all terrains and weather conditions, paired with a selectable high and low transfer case that makes any drive a confident one.

The L300 Delica is easily recognizable in a crowd, though, perhaps not intentionally. SUVs of the era were commonly found with the boxy styling that this example displays and consumers loved it. This example is finished in Color Code W09 Summit White, with the Active World decals still in good shape. Gloss black window surrounds offer contrast around the cabin, furthering the look of this already stand-out van. Found with the factory optioned Monsoon Guards, chrome push bar with yellow fog lights, side steps, rear parking mirror, and door handle Jewelry guards, this example was certainly well optioned.

Stepping into the cabin, you are immediately greeted with cloth patterned seats that are unique and comfortable. Seating for 8 passengers allows road trips with large groups, or can be arranged to maximize cargo space. The back rest of the middle row can be flipped, allowing passengers to face each other while driving. The two rear benches can also be flattened into a bed, largely giving the Delica its place in the adventure van scene. Features include power windows, power door locks, rear curtains, hot heat, cold A/C, front and rear climate control, front cupholders, and dashboard mounted thermometer, inclinometer, and pitch/roll gauges.
