1997 Chevrolet Camaro SS

The Camaro SS returned for the model year 1996 and brought with it a return to real muscle car levels of power and excitement. The SS models were no longer done at the factory, as GM contracted with SLP(Street Legal Performance) out of New Jersey. These special Camaros were built on the same St. Theresa production line as regular Camaros, but then trucked to SLP for the conversion into SS models. SLP would install the new hoods, duck tail spoilers, cold air intakes, SLP exhaust, upgraded suspension, wheel and tires packages, and SS emblems. After this conversion, the cars were trucked to the ordering dealers for the end user. This makes SS model Camaros unique as they are low production due to the somewhat hand-built manner of the conversion process. In model year 1997, Chevrolet produced 54,972 Camaros in total, while only 3,137(or just 5.7%) were SS(RPO R7T) models. The 1997 Camaro SS pictured here for sale is 1 of only 124 red coupes produced with automatic transmission and T-tops. Add in the other individual options of this car from SLP such as the R1 compound tires that only came on 34 total SSs that year, and this could truly be a 1 of 1 as equipped car.
