1988-1992 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE: The Original Factory Racer

With all the hoopla surrounding the new Camaro 1LE, let's look back at the original.

Classic Car Overview

Take some extra time looking over this 1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 SS SLP Convertible. Its a rare car that has been treated with the proper respect in a true classic. Of course, when its also a drop-top with a fuel-injected V8 and a six-speed, you also know this is a classic youre going to take out and enjoy for every moment you can. 1996 is the first year for the return of the iconic Super Sport name to the Camaro. And when you factor in the Bright Teal Metallic and desirable features like the six-speed, this is a rare convertible that the consignor claims was one of only seven convertibles with those options produced in this inaugural year (we have no documentation from GM of these figures). And because this is unique and special, they made sure everyone could recognize the large air-channeling hood scoop that was exclusive to the Super Sport. The odometer is believed to reflect the full actual mileage, and the body has the right look of a respectfully driven car that has averaged under 3k annually. And thats exactly what you want. After all, youll love driving it, but its rarity and distinction mean those are special occasions done with added regard. So the teal paint shows all the right signs of being the original application. It retains the kind of gloss and shine thats quite appealing for a sunshine-friendly convertible. The dark grille and headlight surrounds join the black convertible top for a tasteful contrast, and these fourth-gen Camaro have an overall sleek style thats alluring. So its a bright drop-top thats also unmistakably speedy. The graphite gray leather is such a tasteful contrast against the bright exterior paint, so we bet youll take some extra time sharing it with the world. And another reason to get out there and drive is that this is a loaded package. It has power windows, a power convertible top, power locks, keyless entry/alarm, dual airbags, ABS, cruise control, a tilt steering column, power steering, and provisions for air conditioning (it will need servicing to blow cold again.) The stereo is now a Kenwood AM/FM/CD unit with USB and Bluetooth so you can hook up your phone for the best in modern driving music. The power drivers seat, full gauges, and well-placed shifter signal to your senses that youre in a drivers car. And the plaque on the center console that shows this is a real-deal SS and #1097 of only 2,410 was installed when this special build went through SLP Engineering. The stock 5.7-liter LS1 V8 under the hood was rated at 305 horsepower. It is quite hardy, and that might have even been a bit understated to keep the Corvettes new LT4 as the top dog. Remember, these SS cars were sold and backed by Chevrolet, but they were specially finished by the masters at SLP. They added the forced induction, a performance exhaust, and many other goodies. Plus, the control provided by the six-speed manual transmission means the sound and fury of this desirable V8 is always in your hands. And the power steering, sport tires on Corvette ZR-1 style alloys, and four-wheel power disc brakes make this a lot of fun to enjoy with the roof up or down. The sale comes complete with the owners manual packet. This is the convertible to enjoy now and collect for the future. You may never get a chance at a first-year SLP Super Sport thats so distinct for such an affordable price again. Call today!!!
