If you're a fan of vintage Japanese cars, be sure to check out Nissan's online heritage site. There are tons of vintage Nissan pics and specs going all the way back to the 1920s. Each featured car or truck has relevant specs and a little "detail" tab that gives some background on that specific car.
The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.
Classic Car Overview
If you are looking for a black on black R129 SL500 this is your car. This roadster is the ultimate 90’s coastal cruiser and completely changed the face of Mercedes and luxury cars of the 90’s. Produced before Chrysler joined Mercedes in 1998, this is the car that legendary Mercedes designer Bruno Sacco “The most perfect car of my career”.
I bought this car with the intention of keeping it for many years and letting it gain value, but my circumstances have since changed. I am the second owner of this California car and have repaired and updated just about everything that can go wrong with an SL500. I used the car to drive to my showroom Downtown LA a couple days a week and a few Sunday Palos Verdes and Malibu coastal drives with the lady. I don't really want to part with it but I have another classic car and we are having a baby soon and and the same old story goes; I need to let it go.
The vehicle was purchased last year from a woman who was the original owner. Her ex-husband had a collection of 45 cars and this was one of many that was left to her after a divorce. They had the car at their Hawaii house for many years, and (for whatever reason) it was put into their sons names a couple times over the years. The CarFax shows 5 owners but she had shown me the original paperwork from when her husband bought it for her in 1995. She cried the day I bought it saying it was the first car he had bought her (she also let me drive her Ferrari Modena Spider, which was awesome) I bought the car with 34,000 original miles in great condition as the car was always garaged and maintained, there are a couple blemishes on the bumpers as you can see in the photos, and a few minor scuffs and cracks on the interior trims but no major wear and tear. I put the new wheels on because the old chrome was tarnished (probably from driving it in Hawaii and letting it sit for months without cleaning the wheels). She had put seat covers on the seats the day she bought the car and never took them off, as I removed the old dirty seat covers I noticed the seats looked very close to new. The factory carpet is immaculate, and the classic luxury wool floor mats are very soft and feel incredible. There are also 3 wheels caps with star emblems I had re-plated gold along with the others, but one of them went missing, you may be able to find another one though they are rare. I also have a gold front emblem that will come with the car. The gold and chrome was a dealer option, as no Mercedes came from Germany with any gold or chrome ever. I also have the original stereo and center console tape holder.
This year Hemming's has listed this car as one of the next cars to climb the collectors list and gain value. Its predecessor the 560SL has gone up in value dramatically in the past couple years, so it only makes sense this will do the same. I have learned that these cars and classic Mercedes in general will have problems, even with low miles, always garaged, etc the longer these cars sit, the more problems you may have. This car on the other hand has had many of the problems you will face with other R129’s repaired or replaced at a very reputable Mercedes mechanic in Long Beach, CA called Long Beach Autohaus. They are great people will be more than willing to chat with you to fill you in on the validity of my word. I also had a few things fixed on it at Marx Mercedes in Costa Mesa, CA. Marx used to work on my other Mercedes I've had in the past, they are some of the best in the business as well.
Please REVIEW AND DO YOUR RESEARCH on the list below before purchasing this or another R129. The repairs listed below are the problems you are most likely going to face after you purchase one of these classics.
Below is a list of every repair and upgrade I have have done to the car, it totals up to over $16,000 in repairs and upgrades. I have receipts and records for all repairs listed below except the Hydraulic Top Lifting system (it was replaced by the previous owner and that has been confirmed by my mechanic) I really hate to let this car go as I didn't put this much money into it thinking I was going to sell it. Its such a fun, great driving, head turning car, it drives like new and with proper continued maintenance it will be reliable for many years to come.
I'm open to answer any questions you have about the car via phone of email. I would really love to see it go to an owner who appreciates it. All offers will be considered.

Here are a few issues the car still has -
- The passenger side keyless entry door lock does not work.
- The driver side keyless entry light is opposite, it turns red when opened and green when locked. The mechanic asked if I could “deal” with this instead of getting it replaced, I said “yes I can”
- The back vinyl window on the convertible top is getting some wear but is not very expensive to get replaced if you wanted it to be perfectly clear. I think its fine to be honest.
- Passenger side interior trim is cracked (shown in photos)
- Some paint scuffs on front and rear bumper (shown in photos)
- Hard top roof headliner is coming loose one one area but can be fixed easily.
- Seat adjusters make the seat move a little jerky but they work fine.
