The original Series I model was offered only as a two-door coupe with a rotary engine known as the Mazda Wankel engine. This engine showcased Mazda s focus on future developments and technology, and the concept was carried on through all future generations. An inline 4-cylinder option was offered with the second generation Series CD as well, but the rotary engine remained the most popular choice in Japan due to lower road tax obligations. Also with the second generation, a fastback body style was offered and the third generation Series HB brought with it a 4-door sedan option, as well as the end of the piston engine.
