VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

  • The last front-engine Porsche coupe with four-cylinder power, and the final evolution of the transaxle platform
  • Black over a Classic Grey interior

  • Factory-equipped with a six-speed manual transmission
  • Acquired by Magnus Walker in 2019 while in the New York area

My 1992 black 968 is a car that I bought in New Jersey, and it was my New York car. I actually had this car in New York City I was spending a lot of time there, back when I bought it in 2019.

Its what I would call a DE track canyon setup car. I had Bob at Stable Energies in New Jersey put it on a set of KW coilovers. Its got a deep-dish Momo Mod 7 steering wheel, and its a pretty well-set-up, balanced DE-style streetable track car that is nimble, handles extremely well, and is a lot of fun to drive. So there it is, my 1992 968.

Magnus Walker

In 1990, shortly after the 944 S2s introduction, Porsche engineers began development of the final iteration of the marques perfectly balanced front-engine sports car. Initially dubbed the 944 S3, Porsche soon realized that over 80 percent of the new cars components had either been significantly redeveloped or completely replaced, leaving little of the 944 in its original form. Further, the styling was to feature design elements from its rear-engine sibling, the 993-generation 911.

Now with its own new model number, the Porsche 968 featured an enlarged 3.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine, which produced an impressive 236 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. Further changes included an all-new six-speed manual transaxle, an improvement over the previous five-speed, as well as an innovative, continuously variable valve-adjustment system called VarioCam. Production began in September 1991 and would continue until the 1995 model year.

The Porsche 968 on offer was completed in February 1992, leaving the factory finished in Black with a Classic Grey exterior. Nicely optioned, the vehicle was fitted with a six-speed manual transmission, as well as a hi-fi sound system, a rear wiper, and cruise control.

Originally delivered to an individual in Florida, the Porsche remained down south before being brought to New York in 2001. Magnus Walker acquired the car in 2019 and used it in New York City, proving that the 968 is perfectly tractable in narrow urban environments, not just winding canyon roads. At time of cataloguing, the odometer showed 182,152 miles.

In keeping with most of the Mangus Walker collection, the aesthetics and performance of this 968 car have been improved thanks to the fitment of KW coil overs and 17-inch Cup-style wheels in matching black. Walker further notes the car has received a set of new Hankook tires, new pads, and new rotors, and the fuel lines have been replaced under his ownership.

Representing the last Porsche coupe to feature a front-mounted four-cylinder engine, Walkers 1992 968 showcases Stuttgarts transaxle formula at its most evolved. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/mw26/.
