Motor sports have always been woven into the 911s identity a dedication to blurring the line between road and track. Porsche firmly enforced this principle throughout the 964 generation of the late 1980s and early 1990s. There, track-focused derivatives multiplied: the lightweight all-wheel-drive C4, the dedicated Carrera Cup racer, and its more approachable sibling, the Carrera RS. Yet for the driver seeking an experience nearer the edge, something that captured the Cup cars raw immediacy while remaining subtly tempered for road use by Porsches hallmark engineering finesse, the Carrera RS N/GT offered the perfect solution.
Where the standard Carrera RS pared back weight and luxury, the N/GT went further still with Porsche removing virtually every component not in service of speed or control. The interior, stripped to bare-painted metal and fitted only with thin felt mats, emphasized function over comfort, while flat, minimalist door cards with fabric pull-straps recalled the spirit of the original 1973 Carrera RS 2.7.
Fixed-back Recaro racing seats with Schroth six-point harnesses replaced conventional seating, and sound insulation was removed wholesale, enabling every vibration and resonance of the flat-six to reach the driver unfiltered. The RSs already spartan specification including a seam welded chassis, thinner glass, a simplified wiring loom, and an aluminum hood was further distilled via 17-inch Magnesium Cup wheels, a Matter roll cage, enlarged fuel tank, fire extinguisher, and cockpit-mounted kill switch. It was, in effect, a road-registered racing shell.
Cradled in the rear deck was Porsches 3.6-liter M64/03 flat-six, an engine renowned less for outright performance figures than for its immediacy. The lightweight single-mass flywheel delivered exhilarating responsiveness, while a specially tuned ECU honed throttle reaction to track-ready levels. A ZF asymmetric limited-slip differential ensured optimal traction, while revised suspension geometry, reinforced mounting points, and Turbo-derived brakes endowed the chassis with extraordinary precision. Combined with its significant weight reduction, the result was a car of almost telepathic feedback, alive to every nuance of surface texture and steering input. On a closed road or circuit, few cars of its era offered a more visceral or rewarding dialogue with the driver. Porsche produced just 290 examples of the Carrera RS N/GT, making them among the most coveted of any 911 model ever produced.
Displaying an astounding 49 kilometers at cataloguing time, the Carrera RS N/GT offered here is unquestionably among the most extraordinarily preserved examples available, having been cloistered away its entire life, never raced, displayed, or offered for public sale. A German home-market example, chassis 499157 is finished in Guards Red (G1) over fire-resistant Nomex racing seats and equipped with the models legendary go-fast features: deleted airbags, a locking differential, 17-inch Magnesium Cup wheels, and manual steering.
Feared and revered in equal measure, the RS N/GTs true extravagance lies in its restraint a car standing at the threshold between street and circuit, shaped with an elegance only the pure pursuit of performance can impose.
