Classic Car Overview

1991 Volkswagen Vanagon Multivan Westfalia is the designation of various specially converted Volkswagen camper vans. It is named after Westfalia-Werke, the contractor that built the vans, which is headquartered in the town of Rheda-Wiedenbrck, located in the Westphalia region of Germany. For consignment a Westie which sleeps 4 and has room for 7 to sit and eat smores. This camper conversion has a new short block engine, with the original being replaced in 06 due to an overheating issue. This would be the last year for the rear engine version. This shows little to no rust and just a few scratches but looking ready to tackle the wilds of your backyard, or Utah. Exterior Bordeaux Red (maroon) paint covers the straight rust-free exterior of this pop top camper. The pop top is in clean good condition and is a contrasting tan canvas with a screen for flow through ventilation. A driver over front wheel setup, there are plenty of sliding glass windows to view out of on your trip, and more ventilation. On the rockers of this Westie are showing in a silver paint which corresponds to the bumpers. This band also sports a black trim wrapping the camper on top of the silver. Go Westy alloy rims wrap nice radial tires. Interior Gray broadcloth covers the door panels and seat bolsters which have more broadcloth for the inserts that have striping on them. Dark gray piping surrounds these chairs. Fold down armrests complete with cupholders are there for driver and passenger. Directly behind these buckets are an additional two more buckets which face the back of the camper. These belly up to a central side mounted table which has a long bench facing these buckets and the table. A padded bed creates the ceiling for this eating and sit down space and when the top is popped and provides plenty of sleeping room up top which is also accessible from the back door which is a flip up style. In the way back there is a storage area and a few built in cabinets with flip down doors. The floors are all carpeted with gray carpet, the back being especially clean and dirt free, the others have slight soiling on them. Upfront a square and rectangle dash in black molded plastic houses the radio, gauges, temp controls and a glovebox for the passenger side. Dash is shiny and like new with no cracking seen. Power windows are within the door panels. Drivetrain A lift of the rear storage carpeting and the engine bay is within this space under the carpeting. Full access to the engine is granted when this panel is in the up position. Here we see the likes of which are a new short block, (replaced @ 90K miles), 2.1 liter boxer 4-cylinder engine fed by a Digifant EFI system. There is also a 3-speed automatic transmission. Overall, there is some patina, a little corrosion, and road dirt covering this engine and bay but it has been documented as well maintained. Undercarriage Slight areas of surface rusted parts are underneath, but mostly are coated floorboards, rockers and covering panels (Youve gotta love the Germans for their aero coverings everywhere). The rear has drum brakes, and the casings are showing some heavy surface rust, as is some of the rear suspension, but all working properly. Upfront are disc brakes. The protective metal shield is rusting away on the passenger side brake, and on the drivers side it is non-existent. A bit of chip offs for the undercoating is peppering the floors but otherwise unremarkable. Drive-Ability This Westie fired right up and on the test track presented no problems. I noticed the A/C is weak, and the consignor states the system has a very slight leak and he recharges it every hot season and it lasts through the summer and fall, so it must be a small leak. A camping we will go, a camping we will go, so grab your marshmallows and Hershey bars and you can be off to the wilds of the country. A rust-free example, 2 owner Vanagon with the Westfalia conversion now a comfy camper with seating for 7 and sleeping for 4.
