VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

Merit Partners is proud to present this 1991 964 RS Clubsport build by AP Car Design in Gottingen, Germany. For those not familiar with AP Car Design, they are an exceptional restmod builder and we have had no less than seven of their cars over the last few years with several staying in our private collection. Our CEO has owned his AP 964 for 2.5 years and other than a 993 GT says it is the best air-cooled car he has ever driven. To give further substantiation to the brand, Michael Mauer, the Chief of Design for Porsche, commissioned AP to build him a car back in 2020 further cementing APs reputation as one of the top restomod builders in Europe. Many of these exceptional cars have not made it to the US or gone up for sale so few people have experienced how good these cars are.

In describing an AP car, the goal was never to make a reimagining of the car that a company like Singer or Guntherwerks likes to do. The issue with reimagining is that the car becomes something entirely different all together, not really a true Porsche but a different idea of a Porsche, to some thats a good thing but we prefer to follow the original blueprint of the car as that is the essence of the brand and no one does it better than Porsche as drivers cars. AP cars would best be described as OEM+ or small evolvements in multiple areas to produce a car that stays relevant with the times in terms of power and handling but does not deviate from the original formula Porsche set out to produce back in 1991. Its as if Porsche built the 964 today and therefore would have produced a more capable car than the original. What this means is that if one liked the original 964, the AP will be even more appealing as a drivers car without losing the reliability of the underlying car and allowing it to be serviced at any Porsche dealer.

This particular Mint Green example is started as a base 964 and was then converted to a turbo wide body design with an RS Clubsport flair similar to the 993 RS but with a wide body. The car carries a much significant presence than the narrow body car and drives exactly like it looks which is to say exceptional! The original 3.6L engine has been modified to a 3.8L making 100hp+ than the original car along with single mass flywheel, upgraded Cup exhaust, upgraded suspension, 964 Turbo brakes, short shifter, Speedline wheels and better aero. Full details on the build are available by request. While restomods are not uncommon and other shops are doing them, the magic of AP is how all the parts harmonize together like a perfectly in-tune Orchestra. It is what other restomod shops cannot match and their cars feel like a Frankenstein build with no true identity. The APs feel as good or better than the factory cars themselves with the engine modifications and other mechanical upgrades working seamlessly together.

In our opinion, these cars drive better than other restomods costing 1mm+ and allow an owner to truly have fun in the car without having significant money invested. Porsche will never build cars like the 964s again and while we are very disappointed in knowing that, AP has produced a car that transports us to the golden age of air-cooled cars like the 964 and 993 but with an even better story to tell.
