THE PORSCHE 'TYPE 964' TURBO

Representing a major step forward for the 911, the new Carrera 4 and Carrera 2 - code named '964' - were launched in mid-1989, the former marking the first time that 4-wheel drive had been seen on a series-production 911. Retaining the familiar 911 profile, the 964 was modernized with smoother, better integrated bumpers, new exterior mirrors, and subtle aerodynamic tweaks. Porsche experimented with 4-wheel drive on the 959 supercar, and many of the lessons learned from that project influenced the design of the 964's chassis and suspension. Power-assisted steering (another 911 'first'), anti-lock brakes and a five-speed manual transaxle were standard. Although the normally aspirated duo shared the same 3.6-liter, 247bhp, flat-six engine, the 2-wheel-drive Turbo kept its existing 3.3-liter unit, but considerably reworked with a new turbocharger and more, developing a heady 320bhp.

Thanks to the dramatically flared arches and 'whale tail' rear spoiler (necessary to clear the massive intercooler) the 964 Turbo shows its direct lineage to the legendary 930 Turbo. The 964's revised trailing arm and coil-over damper rear-suspension tamed the old 930's 'widow maker' reputation, while the engine improvements boosted its already blistering performance. The Turbo 3.3 and its later 3.6 stablemate were produced in very limited numbers, representing the final and ultimate refinement of the classic 'hairy-chested' Porsche 911 Turbo before the advanced all-wheel-drive 993 Twin Turbo took its place.

THE CAR OFFERED

Presented in stunning Paint-to-Sample (PTS) Rubystone Red (code G4) (understood to be just one of six cars in this colour) over black leather upholstery, this 1991 '964' Turbo 3.3 is an exceptionally well-preserved example of Porsche's wide-body icon. Delivered new to the German market, this car displays 59,645km (approximately 37,000 miles), recorded at the time of cataloguing, which is remarkably low considering how well these cars can cover huge distances.

Along with its fabulously lurid PTS color, this car is well-optioned with heated power seats, power windows, electric sunroof, impact bumpers, and limited-slip differential. It even retains its original Blaupunkt Symphony LMKU/Cassette stereo. The well-appointed, driver-focused cabin highlights the 911 Turbo's traditional position as the luxury and performance leader in the lineup.

This Turbo 3.3 is refreshingly well-preserved in its original specification, sitting on its factory 17-inch Cup-style wheels, shod with Bridgestone Expedia tires tucked nicely into the wheel arches. It is extremely tidy throughout, benefitting from comprehensive detailing, including the undercarriage, resulting in what is undoubtedly a collector-quality example. The quality is supported by its original stamped service book and a Porsche-issued COA, and the sale includes original manuals, tire inflator, and supporting documentation.

With the classic Turbo punch and sensibly tamed chassis, the 964 Turbo 3.3 ranks highly among late model Porsche collectors. Considering their exceptional all-round useability, well-preserved and well-optioned cars such as this are increasingly scarce and most certainly worthy of careful attention.
