Classic Car Overview
This 1991 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is 1 of just 23 built for the model year with the R7U regular production order code, which specified the car for competition in the Canadian-based Players LTD/GM Motorsports Series. Its finished in Arctic White over gray cloth, and it's powered by a fuel-injected, hand-built 305ci V8 paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes the 1LE Special Performance Package, which added an aluminum driveshaft, baffled fuel tank, four-wheel disc brakes, an engine oil cooler, no air conditioning, and a limited-slip differential.
I acquired the car in 2021. It was originally imported into the U.S. in 2007 from Canada. It now shows 56k kilometers (~35k miles) and comes with GM Canada and PHS documentation, import paperwork, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Alabama title in my name.
Commonly known as the Players Challenge Series, this Canadian road-racing series featured factory-built, street-legal Camaros and Trans Ams competing from 1986 through 1992. This particular Trans Am was not raced in the series, theres no indication it ever saw track duty, but it was used as a promotional vehicle to generate attention for the Players Challenge. It toured dealerships across Canada during the series' heyday. To honor its history, I reinstalled the original Players Challenge decals on the car.
The exterior is finished in Arctic White (10) and features a rear aero spoiler, pop-up headlights, fog lights, power mirrors, and dual exhaust outlets. During my ownership, I replaced a headlight motor. The car does show some minor cosmetic wear, including a dent on the right-front fender, some dings on the nose, a scrape on the back edge of the drivers door, and some degradation of the rubber moldings, consistent with road use.
Currently, the car is sitting on 17" Ronal wheels, as pictured. These wheels will need to be negotiated separately at the time of sale. If not included in the final sale price, the original 16" WS6 wheels will be reinstalled prior to delivery.
Inside, the gray cloth interior features manually adjustable front seats, matching door panels, and carpets. Amenities include power windows and locks, a rear luggage shade, and an aftermarket Pioneer CD stereo, although a radio delete plate is also installed. The headliner is sagging in spots.
The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames a 220-km/h speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level, and voltage. The six-digit odometer shows just under 56k kilometers (~35k miles).
Under the hood, the 305ci V8 was specially hand-built for R7U cars and features ECU tuning for operation with an open exhaust system. Markings are still present, sealing the engine to prevent any modifications in compliance with Players Challenge regulations. A GMMG Catback exhaust has been added for improved sound and performance.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and a Safe-T-Track 3.42:1 limited-slip differential. Rust is visible on some underbody components, as shown in the additional photos.
In preparation for the sale, I recently changed all fluids, including engine oil, transmission fluid, differential fluid, coolant, and brake fluid, so its ready for its next owner.
Documentation from GM Canada confirms the cars initial delivery to Brian Finch Pontiac-Buick in London, Ontario, and lists all factory options, including the rare RPO codes R7U and 1LE.
The attached video was taken by the previous owner at the time of my purchase in 2021.
This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of GM motorsports history, a car with unique provenance, great documentation.
