Classic Car Overview

THE CAR

This is a 1991 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible in black with a black leather interior and red leather seating surfaces, built at Bowling Green, Kentucky on June 28, 1991. Its powered by the L98 350 cubic inch Tuned Port Injection V8 backed by the four-speed automatic overdrive. The odometer reads 84,837 miles. The car carries a Pennsylvania inspection good through June 2027, so its ready to drive home.

1991 is a specific and interesting year in C4 Corvette history for two reasons. First, its the last year of the L98 - the tuned-port 350 that carried the Corvette through the entire back half of the 1980s. Chevrolet replaced it with the LT1 for 1992, so 1991 closes out an era. Second, 1991 was the year the base Corvette finally got the ZR-1s face. Chevrolet gave every Corvette the convex rear fascia with square taillamps that had previously been ZR-1-only, along with a tapered lower nose with wraparound fog lamp and turn signal inserts. If you like the way the late C4 looks, 1991 is where that look starts.

Chevrolet built 20,639 Corvettes for 1991. Only 5,672 of them were convertibles.

WHAT IT HAS

The L98 is the 5.7-liter Tuned Port Injection V8 rated at 245 horsepower and 340 lb-ft of torque, paired here with the four-speed automatic with overdrive and a 2.59 rear axle. That combination is deliberately relaxed - tall highway gearing, smooth automatic, and a torque curve that pulls from anywhere in the rev range without asking you to work for it. This is a convertible built to cover distance comfortably with the top down, not to chase lap times.

Underneath, it runs the FE1 touring suspension with four-wheel power disc brakes and ABS. It sits on 17x9.5 styled aluminum wheels wearing P275/40ZR17 tires all around - the square setup, same size front and rear.

The equipment list is loaded for the year. Electronic automatic climate control, the electronic instrument cluster, Bose AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player, six-speaker sound system, power antenna, heated power outside mirrors, six-way power seat adjusters on both the driver and passenger sides, deluxe reclining bucket seats, leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, and a drivers side airbag.

Inside, the dash, console, door panels, and carpet are black, with red leather on the seating surfaces and black bolsters and headrests. Red accent floor mats with the Corvette flag logo finish it off. Its a sharp combination against the black paint and black top.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The factory RPO list codes this car with a black leather interior (RPO 193). The red leather seating surfaces are an addition, not factory equipment. The work follows the factory panel seams and presents well, but we dont have documentation on when or by whom it was done, and were not representing it as original. The red floor mats are accessory pieces.

The car has 84,837 miles showing. We dont have documentation to verify the mileage, so were listing it as the odometer reads.

This car has the FE1 touring suspension and the 2.59 rear axle, not the Z51 performance package or the performance axle ratio. Thats the right setup for a comfortable convertible and the wrong setup if you were hoping for a track-oriented car. Worth knowing which one youre shopping for.

Pennsylvania inspection is current through June 2027.

We have not had the car on a four-post lift yet, so if you want underbody photos, we can pull it up and shoot whatever you want to see.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The C4 Corvette spent a long time as the generation nobody wanted. For twenty-five years these were the cheap Corvettes - the ones you bought when you couldnt afford a C2 or a C3 and didnt want a C5. Thats changed. Clean, sorted C4s have been climbing steadily as the people who wanted one in high school reached the age where they can actually buy one, and convertibles have led that move.

Within the C4 run, the 1990-1991 cars occupy a sweet spot thats easy to miss. They got the completely redesigned interior that fixed the C4s most criticized feature - the original digital dash gave way to a proper cockpit with analog gauges - and they got the drivers airbag. The 1991 cars added the ZR-1 body updates on top of that. So a 1991 gets you the best version of the L98 platform: the good interior, the good face, the last of the tuned-port engines, and none of the electronic complexity that came later.

For someone who wants an open-top American V8 thats genuinely usable, well-supported by parts suppliers, and still affordable relative to almost anything else with a Corvette badge, a 1991 convertible is a strong argument.

HOW TO BUY IT

The car is at our shop in Orwigsburg, PA.
