Classic Car Overview
1991 BMW M5 $24,800
This BMW M5 is one of 1,296 examples produced in 1991 and was sold new in Alexandria, Virginia where it was kept by the original owner until 2003. It passed through two additional owners before it was acquired by the seller in 2009, and currently shows 66,805 miles on the odometer. Finished in Brilliant Red over Light Silver Grey leather, the car was repainted in 2016 at a cost of around $4600. This example is an early 1991 model powered by a 3.6L S38B36 inline-six mated to a 5-speed manual, and received its last major service in 2011 with receipts for $4000 of work done at the time. Additional records for oil changes, an air conditioning service, and other maintenance are included in the sale, and the seller has provided a clean Carfax report showing no accidents or other issues. The car is offered with a clean North Carolina title in the seller’s name.
Finished in Brilliant Red from the factory, Quality Body Shop in Havelock, North Carolina repainted the car in 2016. New paint was applied across the body and black trim, though the seller notes that the door jams and engine compartment retained their original finish.
New gaskets and seals were installed at the time of the repaint along with replacement emblems. These example features 17″ M-System turbine wheels that featured a directional bolt-on wheel cover over the black alloy wheels designed to dissipate heat from the brakes. I have a set of M-Parallel wheels that you can choose instead of the original turbine wheels.
The interior is trimmed in Light Silver Grey leather that shows creasing and cracking on the seat bottoms along with additional wear on the driver’s outer bolster. The door panels have had repairs done during the seller’s ownership and show signs of aging, and the headliner is reported to be in good condition.
The dash houses an original BMW radio, and the air conditioning was last serviced in October of 2016 and blows cold. The sunroof and all interior electronics are reported to function properly.
Power 3.6L – 3.535L comes in one flavor – S38B36, which is what is on offer here. Dual row chain, dual path (flaps open/close based on throttle position & other factors) intake plenum. Distributor/single coil/plug wires to plugs. All US market E34 M5, early production E34 M5 for all other markets. Large valve cover as shown on this car with “BMW M Power” on it. Fabricated exhaust headers for all markets. Mated to a 5-speed manual, and multiple service records from both the seller and previous owners are included in the sale. The last major service for the car was performed in 2011 at a cost of over $4,000, and included a differential fluid change; new guibo, replacement oil pan gasket, and replacement of the intake manifold and valve cover gaskets.
The engine has a Bavarian Autosport chip installed. The reason most are chipped is because there is/was unlocked potential in these motors and the 307+hp S38 version, to the tune of about 25-35 hp. Basically if you’re going to use premium fuel as needed anyway, the extra horses are “free”, depending on how you can regulate your right foot ;) The more modern V8s like the E39s engine didn’t have all that much more potential, nor did the s54 from the E46M3.
The S38 was a true race engine and basically they were put into the E28M5 and E34M5 with a bit of conservative engineering. They could wind out a lot more than was set for the masses.
Replaced the hood insulation and battery when the exterior was being repainted.
The suspension was cleaned during the 2011 service, and multiple images detailing the condition of the suspension, drivetrain, and chassis can be seen in the gallery.
Assorted service records from the seller’s ownership and previous owners are included in the sale.
