VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

1990 Land Rover Defender 110, 200tdi, LHD, AC, New Galvanized Chassis

We are pleased to offer this 1990 Land Rover Defender110, which has been extensively restored and customized by Rhode Island based Higher Ground Rovers. This 110 has undergone a complete transformation starting with a new galvanized chassis.

This Defender started life as a RHD hard top, equipped with a 200tdi diesel.  We began by stripping the truck down to its chassis and upon inspection; we determined a new chassis was in order.  We purchased a new Rovers North (Marsland) galvanized chassis.  New Bilstein shocks, and springs were mounted to the refurbished axles, to create our rolling chassis. We began the conversion to LHD by rebuilding the front axle and swivel balls. We mounted new brake rotors to refresh the stopping power.  As we build trucks to last, stainless steel brake lines, with stainless steel fittings, and stainless steel hoses were mounted.  A new LHD steering box was installed along with all new P/S hoses. We sent the 200tdi turbo diesel out for rebuild to ensure long lasting  power and durability.  The timing belt was changed and inspection of old belt showed a belt in very good condition.  This indicated to us that this engine has been properly serviced and maintained in its earlier life.  To complete the engine, we sourced a new radiator, new oil cooling lines and all the required hoses.   We had the transmission (LT-77) sent out to be rebuilt.  We also added a Slick Shifter to improve the ease of moving the LT77 through its gears.  The transfer case was inspected and both front and rear output seals were replaced.  In addition, the intermediate shaft o- rings were replaced as well. To possibly be redundant, we changed all fluids and filters on the truck, to include engine oil and filter, transmission fluid and filter, transfer case oil, power steering fluid, and both front and rear differential oil with new breathers.

The Body

All body panels removed and striped of all paint.  We decided to discard all the doors and hinges and go with new pieces.  We then repainted the individual pieces in Land Rover Bonatti Grey.   We purchased new body cappings as the original pieces were in poor condtion.  The wings were in poor condition as well so we purchased new top and side panels.  The truck tub and floor boards were stripped of original paint, primed and sprayed with black Raptor bed liner for a durable finish.  This finish adds a great durability.

Bulkhead was sand blasted to see its condition.  We replaced both footwells with new panels as they did not meet our standards.  Stripped of paint, it was time to prime and paint.  Our next step is to spray the foot wells and engine side of the bulkhead with Raptor for a tough, durable finish to aid a long life.

New side panels were added to replace poor sides of the seat box.

Throughout our rebuild, stainless steel nuts and bolts have been used in all areas appropriate.  The 110 is finished with a new Safety Devices Full Exterior Roll Cage.  Complementing this classic look are modern LED lights all around the truck, with a new front bumper with LEDs as well.

A list of NEW body parts includes, but not limited to:                                                             doors- All 5, door latches with matching keys for all 3 locks, New style, rust-free hinges with stainless steel hardware all around, new front bumper with LEDs, front grill, headlight bezels, side mirrors, LED lights mounted all around,  LED headlights, windscreen and gasket, Hella high/low horn, 5 Sawtooth Alloy wheels finished in Black, 5 New BF Goodrich All-Terrain TA KO/2 tires, wiper arms and spindles, Safety Devices Exterior Roll Cage, 5 entry steps, and a rear tire carrier.

The Interior

As we converted to (Left Hand Drive) LHD, we took that opportunity to upgrade the dash to the style found on the td5 Defenders.  This gives the interior an updated, modern look not found on trucks of this era.  The center console holds a single din Jenson VX3016 radio (AM/FM/Bluetooth/ USB/DVD/Apple/Android/Pandora/Spotify etc.) that has a retractable double din touch screen, offering optionality in your in car entertainment.  The sound comes from new Kicker speakers up front with Polk Audio indoor/outdoor speakers in the rear. A backup camera was added for safety and convenience.

A MAJOR upgrade is a new AC unit that will cool the cabin for those in hot climates.

The front seats are re-trimed with new Exmoor Trim kits, a new Exmoor cubby box, and an Exmoor Trim wood steering wheel.  The middle row seats are all brand new, much more comfortable Exmoor Trim seats.  All middle row seats have seat belts as well.  In the rear, new bench cushions were added to match.  A new full carpet set was added to complete the look.  We updated the head liner in black faux suede that looks sharp.  To finish the new doors, all 5 doors received new door cards.

The Other stuff….

I have described this vehicle to the best of my ability.  The 110 will be available for viewing and I encourage any serious buyer to perform a PPI (Pre-Purchase Inspection).  There are several reputable shops in the area for you to choose from.  Please reach out with any questions.

Thank you.
