Porsche Classic Technical Certificate
One of only 1,685 Turbo S models built worldwide
This highly desirable 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo is finished in Black over a Black partial-leather interior. It combines the performance specification derived from the limited-production 944 Turbo S with exceptional documentation and extensive recent mechanical and cosmetic work.
For 1988, Porsche introduced the limited-production 944 Turbo S as a significant performance upgrade over the standard 944 Turbo. Its specification included a 250-hp M44/52 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four, reinforced five-speed manual transmission with a heavier-duty clutch, external transmission cooler and limited-slip differential, wider forged Club Sport wheels, larger 928 S4-derived front brakes with four-piston Brembo calipers and 304mm rotors, standard ABS, and the M030 sport suspension package with progressive-rate springs, larger anti-roll bars and adjustable Koni dampers. These upgrades transformed the Turbo S into one of the most capable and desirable versions of the 944.
For 1989, Porsche carried the Turbo Ss 250-hp powertrain into the regular 944 Turbo, making the Turbo S specification the basis for the new model years performance configuration. This example was produced in November 1988 and delivered on January 9, 1989, by Huntington Autohaus Ltd. (Porsche Audi VW) in Huntington Station, New York.
According to the Porsche Classic Technical Certificate issued by Porsche Ontario, the car has its original M44/52 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine and G016R five-speed manual transmission, both visually confirmed to match the original records.
Factory equipment includes:
C02 - U.S. Standard Emissions
454 - Cruise Control
490 - Sound Package
494 - Additional Amplifier
650 - Electric Adjustable Sunroof
691 - CD-2 CD Player with Radio
946 - Partial Leather Seats, Front
The paintwork is in beautiful condition, with excellent panel fit and gaps. In September 2024, the car received a comprehensive cosmetic detail, including refinishing all four wheels to their factory finish and detailing the interior and exterior. The interior remains original in character, with the front seats professionally upholstered in Black perforated leather by Robertos Trim in March 2025.
On May 28, 2025, Porsche Ontario performed a Porsche Classic Technical Certificate inspection at 68,362 miles. The certificate documents the Black exterior, Black partial-leather interior, U.S.-market equipment, and Goodyear tires as recorded in the original delivery data. Porsche also confirmed that the engine and transmission numbers match the original records. The inspection described the car as being in excellent overall condition, with no visible body damage, an interior that presents exceptionally well for its age, no visible engine leaks, minimal rotor wear, and no suspension work required.
The current owner acquired the car from Auto Kennel in Costa Mesa, California, on November 20, 2020, with 62,800 miles. Since then, more than $49,000 in documented service and restoration work has been performed, including engine work, cooling-system service, seat upholstery, sunroof repairs, wheel refinishing, power-steering repairs, tires, alignment, air-conditioning service, wheel bearings, timing-belt service, shocks, brakes, and engine mounts.
C&F Auto in Costa Mesa performed extensive work beginning in December 2020, including rear shocks, brake rotors and pads, engine mounts, and front-shock adjustment. In April 2021, C&F replaced the front and rear wheel bearings, drive belts, and sunroof cable. In December 2021, C&F replaced the leaking oil-pressure switch and performed an oil service.
Further C&F work in March 2024 included replacing the battery, power-steering reservoir and related hoses, boost cut-off valve hose, sunroof switch and main relay, wind-deflector hinges and lift covers, oil-pressure sender, instrument-cluster housing, and LED cluster bulbs. GMG mounted and balanced the tires in October and December 2023 and performed a four-wheel alignment, with the final measurements documented as within specification.
Joe Anselmo Motorsports in Costa Mesa subsequently performed significant engine work. At 68,395 miles, inspection revealed a leaking cylinder-head gasket and oil/coolant intermix, requiring a comprehensive engine rebuild. The $16,949 service included engine removal, cylinder-head-gasket replacement, cylinder-head machining and resurfacing, pressure testing, new valve guides and valves, installation of a wide-fire-ring performance head-gasket set, replacement of the main and rod bearings, rod nuts and oil-pan gasket, along with coolant service and reassembly. Additional work included rebuilding the front control arms, rear-axle service, and repair of the right door lock. Further service included replacing the timing belt, balance-shaft belt, clutch disc, guide tube, water neck, and reference sensors. The flywheel was resurfaced, and the three main fuel lines were replaced or rebuilt using updated, heat-protected lines.
With its matching M44/52 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, matching G016R five-speed manual transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, Porsche Classic Technical Certificate, and extensive supporting documentation, this 944 Turbo S represents a particularly well-documented and comprehensively serviced example of Porsches ultimate four-cylinder transaxle performance platform.
Complete with a clean CARFAX, service summary, Porsche Classic Technical Certificate documentation, extensive invoices, and more than $49,000 in recent documented mechanical and cosmetic work, this Black 944 Turbo offers an exceptional combination of provenance, performance, originality, and recent mechanical investment.
