Classic Car Overview

1989 Land Rover Defender 110, 200tdi, LHD, New Galvanized Chassis, Exceptional AC

We are pleased to offer this 1989 Land Rover Defender110, which has been extensively restored and customized by Rhode Island based Higher Ground Rovers. This 110 has undergone a complete transformation starting with a new galvanized chassis.

Our Defender started life as a RHD hard top, equipped with a 200tdi diesel.  We began by stripping the truck down to its chassis and upon inspection; and determined a new chassis was in order and purchased new Rovers North (Marsland) galvanized chassis.  New Bilstein shocks, and Land Rover Springs (Normal Stiffness) were mounted to the refurbished axles, to create our rolling chassis. We began the conversion to LHD by rebuilding the front axle and swivel balls.  As we build trucks to last, stainless steel brake lines, with stainless steel fittings and stainless-steel hoses were mounted.  The brakes up front received new rotors and pads, while the entire rear drum assembly has been replaced.   A new LHD steering box was installed along with all new P/S hoses. We went over the 200tdi turbo diesel to ensure long lasting power and durability.  The timing belt was changed to a Genuine Land Rover timing belt, even though, upon inspection of old belt it showed a belt in very good condition.  This indicates that this engine has been properly serviced and maintained in its earlier life.  We adjusted the valve tappets to the proper gap, as well as to reseal the rocker cover.  The lower block and oil pan were inspected for any indications of wear or damage, but all looked good.  A final check of valve compression proved all 4 cylinders have strong compression, and variation that falls well within normal tolerances.  To complete the engine, we sourced new cooling hoses.   The transmission shifts smoothly into all gears.  A new clutch was installed along with clutch master and slave.  The transfer case was inspected; both front and rear output seals were replaced.  In addition, the intermediate shaft o- rings were replaced as well.  All fluids and filters on the truck have been changed; including engine oil and filter, transmission fluid and filter, transfer case oil, power steering fluid and both front and rear differential oil.

The Body

All body panels were removed and striped of all paint.  We discarded all the doors and hinges, and purchased new pieces.  The individual pieces were than repainted in Land Rover Bonatti Grey.  We purchased new body cappings as the original pieces were in poor condition. The wings were in poor condition as well, so we purchased new top and side panels.  The truck tub and floor boards were stripped of original paint, primed and sprayed with black Raptor bed liner for greater durability in the finish.

As our trucks are built to last, we purchased a new Bulkhead from Rovers North, which was primed and top coated.  The foot wells and engine side of the bulkhead were sprayed with Raptor for a tough, durable finish to aid in long life.

The seat box panels were in poor condition, so we sourced new side panels. The battery box and tool box, both located under the seat, are new aluminum boxes for a long rust-free life.

The 110 is finished with a new Safety Devices Full Exterior Roll Cage and ladder, which increases the level of safety dramatically.  In our opinion, these roll cages should be a stock safety item from the factory.

Throughout our rebuild, stainless steel nuts and bolts have been used in all areas appropriate.  Complementing the classic look of this build are modern LED lights all around the truck, with a new front bumper of LEDs as well.

A list of NEW body parts includes, but not limited to:                                                             doors- All 5, door latches with matching keys for all 3 locks, new style, rust-free hinges with stainless steel hardware all around, new front bumper with LEDs, Heritage style front grill, headlight bezels, side mirrors, LED lights mounted all around,  LED headlights, windscreen and gasket, Hella high/low horn, 5 18’ Sawtooth Alloy wheels finished in Black, 5 New BF Goodrich All-Terrain TA KO/2 tires, wiper arms and spindles, Safety Devices Exterior Roll Cage, 5 entry steps, and a rear tire carrier.

The Interior

As we converted to (Left Hand Drive) LHD, we took the opportunity to upgrade the dash to the style found on the latest “old styled” Defenders.   The Puma styled dash by Ministry of Defender gives the interior an updated, modern look not found on trucks of this era.  The center console holds a Double din Kenwood radio (AM/FM/Bluetooth/ USB/DVD/Apple/Android/Pandora/Spotify etc.). The sound comes from new speakers up front, with Polk Audio indoor/outdoor speakers in the rear. A backup camera was added for safety and modern convenience.

A MAJOR upgrade is the new Puma AC/Heater unite by Ministry of Defender.  Unlike normal Defender units that are always attempting to change the outside air, what make this unit so unique is that it draws all its air from the cabin.  The result is faster temperature changes and more temperature change variation. In summer the AC will get the truck colder, and heat to hotter temperatures in the winter.  This is a VAST improvement over the stock system.

The front seats are brand new from Lucari Solutions. A new Lucari cubby box, and an Exmoor Trim Leather steering wheel complete the front.  The middle row seats are all brand new Lucari captain seats, with center cubby to match the front.  All middle row seats have seat belts as well.  In the rear, new bench seats and cushions were added to match with seat belts.  A new full carpet set was added to complete the look.  We updated the head liner in black faux suede for a sharp, modern appearance. The rear side body panels are finish in a light grey faux suede for added style, and not to absorb as much interior light. To finish the new doors, all 5 received new door cards.

The Other stuff….

I have described this vehicle to the best of my ability. The 110 is available for viewing, and I encourage any serious buyer to perform a PPI (Pre-Purchase Inspection).  There are several reputable shops in the area for you to choose from.  Please reach out with any and all questions.

Thank you.
