By the late 1980s, the Lamborghini Countach was already an indisputable icon, an angular, mid-engine fantasy that had spent over a decade warping young minds and adorning bedroom walls across the globe. With the arrival of the 25th Anniversary Edition in 1988, Lamborghini did more than just celebrate a milestone for the supercar: It sent off its most outrageous creation with a final, unapologetic roar.
The 25th Anniversary Countach was not a radical reinvention, but rather a thoughtful, precision-tuned evolution of everything that had made the Countach extraordinary. Designer Horacio Pagani refined the cars famously aggressive bodywork. What resulted was a suite of subtle but effective aerodynamic updates: reworked front and rear bumpers, deeper air intakes, revised side skirts, and new cooling ducts over the rear fenders. The cabin took a measured step toward civility via power-operated seats and windows, standardized climate control, improved bolstering, and a re-engineered steering assembly. The new Countach was still a supercar that demanded commitment but, for the first time, also offered a degree of comfort.
Under the rear deck, the familiar 5.2-liter V-12 produced around 455 horsepower and was paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. The mechanicals benefited from fine-tuning courtesy of rally legend Sandro Munari, who revised the suspension and fitted wider Pirelli tires to help tame the beasts famously unruly handling.
Performance remained scorching: 0 to 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds, with a top speed of more than 180 mph. But the real achievement of the 25th Anniversary Edition was its balance, as it retained every bit of the Countachs flamboyance while smoothing over its roughest edges. Produced from 1988 to 1990, the 25th Anniversary Edition rightfully became the most commercially successful Countach, with a run of approximately 657 units.
This example is finished in the wonderful factory shade of Rosso Perlato (224147) over a tan leather interior. The car is said to have been repainted under prior ownership. The Lamborghini rides on 15-inch OZ Racing wheels and features the desirable rear wing. The tan leather interior features a gated shifter, climate control, JVC head unit, as well as power seats, windows, mirrors, and locks. Lamborghini chief test driver Valentino Balboni signed the dashboard and photos of him with the car are included in the sale. The Countachs odometer displayed 35,999 kilometers (22,369 miles) at time of cataloguing.
As the final chapter in the Countach saga, the 25th Anniversary Edition bid a fitting farewell to Lamborghinis most audacious creation. This fascinating example offers a compelling opportunity to acquire one of the definitive poster cars of the 20th century still as bold, brash, and breathtaking as the day it was delivered.
