1989 Ford LTD Crown Victoria Station Wagon For consignment, a 1989 Ford LTD Crown Victoria station wagon with a title verified 59,079 actual miles. Owned by our consignor for 22 years who was attracted to its originality, low mileage and its heavy duty tow option. Less than six thousand Crown Vic station wagons were produced in 1989 and according to the Marti Report that will accompany the car, just 533 of them had the trailer tow package. Exterior Our time capsule begins with a coat of solid Twilight Blue Metallic paint covering the long panels and boxy profile. Long rear side windows start where the sedan would end, and the rear overhang is almost as long! As boxy as it is, the front shows hints of rounded edges to come in future years, but the chrome framed grille and bezels are still upright over a large, chrome bumper. The hood goes on forever just before the raked windshield takes over and lifts the roof high, allowing for large windows that in addition to the rear pieces, create an airy feel and open greenhouse. The roof rack is an attractive piece, adorned with woodgrain decals that adds a welcome dimension to the roof line. Ten years earlier, National Lampoons Vacation would double the tail lights on their LTD wagon, but we think its much more attractive in factory form, handsome lenses bookending a wide, left hinged tailgate with embedded third brake light. Imperfections include some scuffs, scratches and dings on this otherwise clean and straight wagon. Interior The dark blue of the exterior is matched with the Shadow Blue interior beginning on the door panels of vinyl, plastic, and carpeted kick panels. All four are spotless but the elastic keeping the map pockets taut gave up a while ago and both hang loose. Its hard to imagine a family wagon without some simulated wood trim and its here on each door and framing all instrumentation on the dashboard. A split bench seat is dressed in plaid DuraWeave, with vinyl framing and looks spectacular and the rear bench matches in color and quality. No third row in the back, but a substantial open and flat space covered in nice blue carpet. Up front, it does not veer from the LTD sedan with a horizontal speedometer to 85 mph, column shifter, A/C panel, and updated AM/FM/CD radio and everything is in amazing condition. The blue carpet shows minimal wear and the long, blue headliner is in great shape. Drivetrain Fords familiar 5.0 liter EFI engine is under the hood showing usage but clean for age and mileage, backed by 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission that sends power to the Ford 8.8 in back with 3.55 TracLoc, part of the towing package. Other additions for the towing package include an auxiliary oil cooler, heavy duty radiator, and dual exhaust, just to name a few. Heavy duty rear power drum brakes were standard on the wagons and added to the sedan when the towing package option was selected, while power disc brakes occupy the front. Undercarriage Super clean underneath with minimal surface rust. The gleaming dual exhaust system includes an H-pipe, stock style mufflers, and tailpipes that turn east and west and exit to the side behind the rear wheels. Suspension here is configured as coil springs up front and a 4 link with coil springs out back. According to the brochure, heavy duty U-joints are part of the towing package. Drive-Ability Its like driving an LTD through a tunnel, only the tunnel is attached to your car! Its a long way back there but the wide rear window allows for plenty of visibility and the engine, rated at a mere 160 horsepower, adequately pulls the car, aided by the free breathing of the dual exhaust. You wont win slalom races in this car, but it tracks straight, rides soft, and stops on demand. We note the A/C not working but all other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. Sure, the red carpet would roll out for you at Radwood. But who wouldnt love to see this at any car show? Its incredibly original, a rare find, and the wagon life brings back memories for millions of Americans. Our consignor believes this car has never towed anything, but that doesnt mean you wont benefit from the heavy duty components added make this LTD a little more enjoyable to drive and stronger than your average brick.
