With all the hoopla surrounding the new Camaro 1LE, let's look back at the original.
The story of the ZL1 Camaro, fitted with that rarest of the rare, all-aluminum 427 big-block V-8, is one that has often been told: How only 69 were made, how they exploited the GM option-ordering system, and how they've become the Camaro guy's ultimate Camaro.
Classic Car Overview
Rare 1989 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 IROC-Z 1LE. 5 speed manual with 305 tuned port injection (230 hp/300 ft. lb torque). Red with gray and black interior. 19,300 miles, original and 1 of 111 1LEs made in 1989. Red was super rare color for 1LEs. Runs and drives great . Accelerates strong and brakes are excellent
This rare car runs and drives just like new and has been kept as close to the day 2 race condition as possible. A third brake light, Accel ignition change and tachometer black out film are just a few of their modifications. The 1LE package consisted of heavy-duty brakes from the Corvette, an aluminum driveshaft, special shocks and fuel tank baffling. Buyers had a choice between a 305 cubic-inch V8 with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 350 cubic-inch V8 with a 4-speed automatic. The package was available for the IROC from 1988 through 1990, and the Z28 from 1991 until 1992. The great thing about the package was that it was street-legal. 1LE-equipped Camaros came with heavy-duty suspension, without air conditioning and were not available with weight adding amenities like T-tops, fog lamps and cruise control.
1LE Package includes:
* fog lamp delete
* aluminum driveshaft (JG1)
* Performance exhaust (N10)
* special deflected disc shocks
* aluminum spare wheel with smaller spare tire (N64)
* lower control arms/ larger front disc brakes/ large front spindles
* PBR front, dual piston calipers
* special swinging fuel pickup in large 18 gallon gas tank
* G92 rear axle (3.45)
* ac delete (C41)
Includes window sticker, paper work, new tires, new interior and racing modifications left as found. Racing history was five, 1st place finishes and on, 2nd place finish by Al Mitchell in SCCA regionals. Roll cage was removed by previous owner but I have original modified dash cut up due to roll cage. Interior has been refreshed with new carpet, seat covers, dash and headliner. Fun to drive and a must for a serious Camaro collection.
