VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

This 1989 635csi is Alpine White with full black leather interior, and is for sale by a 30+ BMWCCA member and avid BMW fan. I acquired this mostly original/factory stock coupe from the 2nd - owner located in Louisville, KY in 2018. The original owner lived in the high and dry desert around Temecula, CA for 15 years. He fell ill and moved – along with the Coupe - to IL in 2015. His widow sold the Coupe to the second owner in 2016, whom I purchased it from in 2018. This 635csi coupe has the original 3.5L engine and 5 speed transmission and has clocked 139,300 miles. It was in very good driving and aesthetic order when I bought it (including AC!). But my intent was to make it as fresh and reliable as practical, while keeping the look of this classic coupe. As shown in the Carfax report and by observing the vehicle, this coupe has not been involved in any accident. It also appears to have not been exposed to snow/grit/salt, nor had any rust repair. The engine bay, undercarriage and trunk do not show any appreciable signs of corrosion.

The 1989 635CSi was equipped with a full-functioning hydraulic self-leveling system. I wanted to make this coupe super-reliable and more fun to drive. Rebuilds and upgrades include KONI/Eibach coilover, new suspension bushings, and bigger BMW brakes. Engine-wise, the valves were adjusted, new timing chain and guide, oil seals, ignition wires, cap and rotor. A Jim Conforti chip was installed in the ECU, which improved throttle response. Cooling system included new water pump, thermostat, all hoses, heater shut-off valve, and all-aluminum radiator. Drive line rebuilds include a driveshaft, and original 5-sp tranny rebuild by Metric Mechanic’s Jim Rowe, while adding a lighter single-mass flywheel and new heavier-duty clutch parts. The wheels were upgraded to 17” BBS forged wheels with Michelin 225-45 Pilot Sport 4S tires. I fitted the coupe with a full cat-back BMW factory exhaust system.

The second owner drove this 635csi to Greer, SC for the 2018 CCA Southeast SharkFest, where he won two awards for this Shark – “E24 Best in Show” and “E24 Clean Class.” I have further detailed this coupe. Sure, it has imperfections, but overall, this Shark is stunning to view, and fun to drive. All of the instrument panel and features and switches work, as does the AC, which was converted via a factory BMW kit to 134A refrigerant.  It has the original, and fully functioning BMW cassette sound system.  It has a full original leather interior, which is supple and in good condition for its age.

As the third owner, I was possessed to make this coupe as reliable as possible by replacing wear/aging items, and make it more fun to drive with the suspension and brake upgrades. I have substantial documentation, including that of the prior owners that covers the entire span of the coupe’s life. $26,000.
