VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

UPDATED 5/19/2024

This very special 1988 Nissan Pulsar NX SE VIN number JN1CN34S8JM007576 has been cared for and nearly restored by me since I purchased it in March 2011 with 104K miles on the odometer. Over the years, I have raided the few junkyard Pulsars I could find to gather all missing or damaged interior pieces. I removed the 1.8L CA18DE engine so that the body and engine compartment could be completely painted, and performed a top end rebuild including honing the cylinders, new rings, head machining, valve job, springs, seats & seals, new timing belt and factory spec tuning. A new clutch kit was installed at the same time. I've replaced many of the sensors, seals, gaskets and ancillary parts with OEM or quality aftermarket parts as needed, and have strived to keep everything stock (exceptions are radio, front speakers, shift knob, paint, A/C conversion). This vehicle is currently registered with a clean title and has passed California SMOG tests every renewal period since I've owned it. As of today, 5/19/24, the odometer reads 111079, so everything done to date has less than 7,000 miles of use. I'm currently commuting to work via Pulsar every day (88 miles round trip). She runs like a dream and I can't help but smile every trip down the 154 pass here in Santa Barbara County, CA.
This car features the optional 1.8 liter dual overhead cam naturally aspirated CA18DE engine (125 hp, 112 lb-ft torque) 5-speed manual transmission, front wheel drive, air conditioning, heater, power steering, power mirrors, front disc and rear drum brakes, manual windows and locks. It sports unique design elements including removable standard notch back hatch and optional SportBak wagon canopy, T-tops, pop-up power headlights and the iconic slatted tail lights. Included in the sale will be the thick and heavy Nissan service manual, a handful of extra OEM parts included in some eBay lots I purchased and a couple of very cool near-mint condition '88 Pulsar NX color marketing brochures.

The original paint color was champagne gold metallic. The new paint job was professionally handled by RiteWay Auto Paint and Bodyworks in July of 2018. I chose to use House of Kolor Blueblood Shimrin Graphic red in homage to a 1973 Mach I Mustang I had restored and painted the same color many years ago. It was finished with House of Kolor Kosmic Urethane Show Klear. The SportBak canopy has been painted to match as well. The car has lived in my garage since I've owned it so has had minimal time in the sun. As of today, there are a few small chips (one 5mm on driver door, one 5mm on hood, some tiny ones near front edge of hood) and a few small scratches. The SportBak canopy has a small dull spot in the clear coat on top where it rested against a piece of cardboard in storage.

I have a few receipts of these replaced components as well:
water pump 6/5/2011
A/C converted from R12 to R134A 7/16/2011
engine and transmission mounts 5/19/2017
clutch kit 5/22/2017
fuel pump 6/13/2020
A/C compressor relay 6/13/2020
4x Hitachi coil packs 4/29/23
OEM steering pinion seal kit 5/10/24

Here is a list of all incomplete items and issues that I am aware of:
SportBak canopy has no back glass, and tint on its side windows has some bubbles along edges
Missing lift rods for SportBak canopy
There is a 1" x 2" triangle scratched into the driver side window glass just above the door handle
There are two small areas about 2"-3" in each lower corner of the notchback rear glass that have light scratches
The exterior lock pillar finisher trim pieces (behind windows, above door handles) are missing
Paint chips and wear noted above
Speedometer displays speed about 10% faster than actual (Ive read this is common for many vehicles of this vintage)
The dash panel has a 6"-7" thin crack at about the midpoint, and 4 smaller cracks (1" or less)
Tire date code 2011 (front) 2013 (rear), but good tread left 7/32" front, 10/32" rear
Suspension components are still mostly original (replaced a few small items but have no receipts and can't remember exactly which)
Interior dome light manual switch inoperative (the lamp does turn on/off when doors opened/closed)
