Classic Car Overview

1988 Lincoln Town Car The Lincoln Town Car is a model line of full size luxury sedans that was marketed by the Lincoln division of the Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from a limousine body style, the Town Car was available from 1981 to 2011 with the nameplate previously serving as the flagship trim of the Lincoln Continental. Produced across three generations for 30 model years, the Town Car served as the flagship sedan of Ford Motor Company and was marketed directly against the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. Within the Lincoln model line, the Town Car was not directly replaced; the nameplate was used from 2012 to 2019 to denote livery/limousine/hearse variants of the Lincoln MKT. For 2017, the revived Continental replaced the MKS, closely matching the Town Car in wheelbase and width. Gracing our hallowed halls here at the Classic Auto Mall, we have for consignment a 1988 Lincoln Town Car in Crystal Metallic. This luxury classic has all the right option boxes checked, V8 power, overdrive transmission, power accessories galore, and miles upon miles of leather upholstery. If youve been dreaming about a classic luxury car with low actual miles, (66,513), then read on and Ill bring all of your dreams to fruition. Exterior The 1980s square and rectangle design abounds on this car with its Rolls Royce-esque grille, hidden headlights, opera window C pillar, and rocker wide stainless steel trimming. You can be rolling in style with just the turn of a key. All metal is bathed in Crystal Clearcoat Metallic, and a soft supple vinyl 1/2 carriage roof resides on the back of the top. The long hood culminates with dual hidden headlights, a large chrome bumper and some cathedral style corner running lights/turn signals on either side of the corners of the front quarters. Chrome Town Car script is just behind the front wheel and the gaps on the 4 doors are well minded. On the rear of the car are more vertical corner lights/taillights and below the trunk lid is a reflective red bar that holds the reverse lighting. Finned aluminum wheels are on all 4 corners and wrapped with thin white sidewall tires. Interior A swing of the heavy but well balanced, well appointed doors shows some molded vinyl in Titanium, some faux wood grained appliqu, gray carpeting and plenty of convenience toggles and joysticks. Slipping inside we see some well preserved leather in Titanium, overstuffed in a large wide bucket form. In the center are dual folding down armrests. In back is another leather bench seat in Titanium leather, presenting clean, buttoned, and very nicely preserved. All this is floating in a sea of gray carpeting which shows a few stains and light fading on it as well as the floor mats. The original dash is a mixture of more molded vinyl in gray, wood appliqu and a trio of lined up square gauges for the cluster in front of the drivers wheel. More toggles, pulls and another joystick along with temp sliders and the factory AM/FM/Cassette stereo unit mounted in the dashs wood appliqu panel in the center. Headliner is a fuzzy broadcloth and is tight and gray. Drivetrain Under the large, in charge, long, and strong hood sits a 302ci V8. This unit is fairly clean and most other parts seen within this engine bay are clean as well with little corrosion or surface rust. This mill is fed by EFI, and on the back is an AOD 4-speed automatic transmission. The rear axle is an 8.8 inch Ford and has a 3.27 conventional gear ratio. Undercarriage The frame has only surface rust which is unremarkable. The floors are clean and mean showing no rust or corrosion, suspension components have only surface rust, all clean down here. Power disc brakes are in front, and power drums for the rear. Stock style single exhaust snakes its way to the rear of the car and is in uncompromised condition. Drivability The car fired right up and off to the test track we went. Our first sign something was amiss was when the brakes are applied the right rear brake wants to lock up, once known about it can be handled but on the first occasion it took some creative driving to keep the car straight. Our test drive went well with smooth acceleration, shifting and a comfortable luxurious ride. We did notice the air conditioning blows warm and the high beams dont stay on with the toggle switch. A low mileage well cared for example of 80s square and rectangle luxury. Good paint and interior as well as oodles and oodles of bells and whistles make this car a great toy or even a retro luxury daily driver. A few issues to be addressed, the rear brakes being the main one, and this car will serve you well for many years to come.
