1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Overview:

I acquired this Grand Wagoneer in August 2021 with approximately 185,000 miles from a family member in Georgia, who acquired it from a private seller in Georgia in 2019. It has spent its known life in Georgia and North Carolina. I drive it 2-3 times per week (~20 miles roundtrip), and over five years of ownership I have systematically worked through its mechanical needs, culminating in a complete remanufactured engine in March 2025 with fewer than 3,000 miles on it since.

This is an honest, comprehensively sorted driver not a restoration. I am looking for a buyer who knows what a 38-year-old FSJ is: these vehicles reward attention and punish neglect, and this listing is written for someone who understands that. A pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic of your choosing is welcomed and encouraged.

The original AMC 360 was replaced in March 2025 with a remanufactured AMC 360 from Titan Engines. Reason for replacement: low compression with persistent oil leaks and burning of oil.

Installed with the engine:
1. New water pump
2. Edelbrock Performer intake manifold (Model 2131)
3. Edelbrock 600 CFM 4-barrel carburetor (Model 1406), with aftermarket open-element chrome air cleaner (factory heated-air intake not retained)
4. New spark plugs, plug wires, distributor, and distributor cap.
5. New battery

Titan Engines warranty: 3 mile/36,000 mile warranty that is not transferable to new owner. Invoice and documentation included with sale.

-Fuel system: the original mechanical fuel pump was bypassed in July 2024 in favor of an electric pump which is located on the fuel rail.

-Emissions: the smog pump, air injection plumbing, and were removed by the previous owner. North Carolina does not test pre-1996 vehicles; buyers in emissions-testing states should verify their local requirements before bidding.

-Cooling: radiator is an aftermarket aluminum radiator which was installed prior to ownership. The truck holds temperature in summer stop and go traffic.

Drivetrain:

-Transmission: TorqueFlite 727 automatic. -----
-Transfer case: NP 229. Fluid changed 5/2026
-Front and rear differential fluid changed 5/2026.
-4WD engagement: the factory vacuum-actuated front axle system was leaking at switch and would not engage 4WD. The OE switch is no longer produced by Jeep therefore a used switch was sourced off of Ebay. All switches sourced from EBay leak therefore a new aftermarket vacuum actuated push/pull type switch from BJs Offroad was installed in July 2026 and engages the 4WD without any problems.

Known Issues Read Before Inquiring:

1. Power locks and windows: Drivers side only unlocks the drivers side door, the passenger side door and the rear passenger side door and does not unlock the rear drivers side door. The driver side does not lock any doors. The drivers side can roll up and down all windows except the rear passenger side window but can be operated from the rear passenger door.

2. Speedometer needle bounces. Cable sections was replaced in 2026 without resolving it; the fault is presumed to be in the speedometer head. Odometer appears to accumulate accurately.

3. Fuel gauge bounces while driving but is readable once settled. Sending unit was replaced (2024); fault persists.

4. A/C blows cold intermittently. The system was converted to R-134a by a prior owner. Please assume diagnosis and repair are required at unknown cost.

5. Cruise control was deleted when engine was installed in March of 2025


6. Automatic transmission pan has a slight leak. New Gasket, filter, and fluid will be conveyed with purchase.

7. Rear defrost does not work.

Body, Rust, and Cosmetics:

Southern truck, no road salt exposure in its known history. No frame rust. Body condition by area:


-Tailgate, lower seam, and window channel: some surface rust on the lower seam.
-Engine bay: surface corrosion on inner fenders and radiator support surface only, no perforation
-Paint: notable flaws. Clear coat is missing on various sections. Deep scratches throughout.
-Woodgrain: Condition varies by side: the driver side presents well; the passenger side is significantly sun-faded with streaking, and the tailgate panel is the most weathered on the vehicle. Surrounding trim moldings have faded significantly.
-Chrome and brightwork: bumpers, grille, mirrors, drip rails, and window trim have various imperfections/dings. In 2021 a garbage truck hit a truck and it rolled into the wagoneer and cracked the grill slightly along with denting the upper portion of the grill slightly.
-Headlights: Replacement Hella h4 with wiring harness and relay system.

Interior:
-Interior was overhauled prior to ownership

The vehicle is sold in its present "as is" condition, with all faults, known or unknown. The seller makes no warranties, express or implied, including no implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. The entire risk as to the quality and performance of the vehicle lies with the buyer. If the vehicle needs service or repair after purchase, the buyer and not the seller shall pay the entire cost of all necessary work. These terms will be restated in a bill of sale signed by both parties at the time of sale.
