In just a few short years, Walter P. Chrysler took his company from an unknown automotive manufacturer to fourth in the industry. Walter Chrysler was a perfectionist with a deep mechanical background. This aspect, probably more than anything, helped to make Chrysler Corporation grow quickly.
Classic Car Overview
Leading up to 1988, Buick wanted a luxury and sporty two-seater to compete with Mercedes and BMW. In the American sports car market, they would be competing with Mustang, Corvette, Camaro, Trans Am, Pontiac Fiero, Dodge Daytona and Chrysler Conquest. They decided to focus on luxury rather than sporty. In the four years of production, 21,751 Reattas were built. They had projected building 20,000 a year. At $25,000, it was priced very competitively. The Reatta was aimed at the mature driver who wanted all the snappy looks, but in a very reliable and luxurious cruising car. In 1988 (first year), 4,000 Reattas were built. Today, the Reatta is a collector car with an enthusiastic owner's club. The "collector license plate" ensures no annual tabs to buy. Parts unique to the Reatta are available through a large Reatta specialty parts distributor on the East Coast. Mechanical parts are available everywhere.
Lots of Mustangs, Camaros and Corvettes are on the road, but you never see a Reatta. If you want something stylish and unique, Reatta is a great choice. Reattas were not built on an assembly line. They are considered hand-built due to the way robots moved them between different work stations. This explains why they feel so solid and quiet.
ACTUAL MILEAGE IS 33,900 miles. This Reatta has been owned by three people and it's been loved. It’s only been driven an average of about 1,000 miles a year. Most of the time, it's been in a garage and kept off the road to avoid careless drivers, adverse weather, etc. I bought it nearly two years ago with the thought of taking it to car shows, but then Covid hit and there were no shows. Now, at age 81, I'm not into showing it at car shows. On the street, at gas stations and in parking lots… it gets attention. My Reatta is responsive and sure-footed on curvy roads. It's really fun to drive.
Buick's 3.8L V-6 transverse engine has always been a bullet-proof performer. It's multiport fuel injected engine has a beautiful sound due to the somewhat unique firing order. If you're a car guy, you'll love the little rumble from the exhaust. The Reatta has a fully independent suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, and front wheel drive. There is a 4-speed automatic with overdrive. Although not a street-racer, it has a good amount of torque making it fun to accelerate from a stoplight, or move briskly on a freeway on-ramp. No leaks from drivetrain, or in the cabin. On the road, it feels solid, quiet and silky smooth. No rattles or squeaks! Everything works as it should.
The 1988 and 1989 models had a very unique tech package that was way ahead of what was going on in the late 80's (even the 90's). It has the "touchscreen" that provides lots of information. The sound system is excellent. Pop-up headlights work perfectly and give it a very clean look during the day. This car needs nothing!
It looks new inside and out. Previous owners really babied this car. No dents, no scratches, no rust, bright chrome, clean aluminum wheels, perfect glass. One small dimple on the left headlight cover. The only modification has been the tinted glass. The leather seats are genuine leather (not the fake stuff). There are no tears or stains. The headliner is flawless. The carpets are like new. The trunk carpeting is perfect. East Coast Reattas suggested Uniroyal Tiger Paw tires and these new tires were mounted about 1,500 miles ago. Original paint looks fantastic. The red color is the proper color (used in almost all their advertising). The camel leather seats look great with the red exterior.
Even if you used this Reatta as a daily driver and ignored it's "collectible" status, it would be a terrific car with only 33,900 miles and priced at $9,800. And, it will definitely hold it's value if well cared for.
